Research doesn't show much benefit from the current rider-education approach that emphasizes just initial motorcycle-rider training. The Motorcycle Safety Foundation thinks that the second or third time is the charm.

I agree, I took my MSF after I'd been riding for about 2 months. Just went with the old nuttin during that time as far as license, but O well! Plus I took the advanced corse and not the crappy beginers...

I had an advanced course several years ago. It was taught by a Highway Patrol Officer who had ridden over a million miles on crowded streets and highways. They only did it for several months and then they ran out of money. It was sponsored by AAA and the Highway Patrol. It was hands on and the best course I ever took. I wish they'd have it again.

Yeah, that sounds great! I wish they had something like that around here as well.

When I took my class, I had my old Ninja EX-500 and the instructor loved it. He even rode it and was draggin peg like crazy with it, while we all just watched...it was funny and cool.

I agree that people should have to take the riding skills portion of the MC test to renew. In Florida, If you have tickets/points on your car license they make you take the written or driving section again to renew. I would like to see something along those lines for MC license. I would object to being forced to attend a mandatory riding course with a $100.00 + price tag to renew. I have 30 years with my MC endorsement and a safe driver label on the front of my license. But I think there should be toughening of the requirements for licensening especially for those with tickets/at fault accidents. Yes, that is me on the bumblebee doing circles and fig 8's in the shopping center parking lot after midnight.

How do you get that. I know from being a safe driver but how. A certain amount of years of safe driving or what. And its a label on there too.

there's nothing like that for PA drivers licenses that I know of..but would be cool. I wouldnt necesarrily mind taking updated classes now and then, but if the state is going to mandate it, then they need to pick up the tab. Hell, we've already got the MSF, they could just utilize that resource to its fullest , and think of the possibilities it would create for better riders!!

Well, I'm going to side with the Twisty's of the world on this one. $100 + penalty to renew your license because you have a ticket!! WTF are you smoking! What are you trying to fund? That would be rediculus. That is the reason there is a fine on the ticket. The fine is the monitary ouch of getting a ticket. No double dipping!!!!!!!!!!

Now, the idea of a renewal test or drive. They have that in Florida due to all the retired people down there. But I think that should be everywhere. There are ALOT of drivers out there that need to get their head "renewed". Thank God were only 4 years from the MP "Master Plan". I'm sure it has something to help out with the idiot drivers!!!!

I'm with N4S and DJ, what's that safe drive thing?!?!? Do you get a insurance deduction for it?????

...Rare 'second chance'

Wilson urged veteran riders to take an annual refresher through the state Motorcycle Rider & Safety Education Program class. They cost $25 and are offered at Delta College.

Wilson --he is Kanicki-Wilson's husband -- advised new bike buyers to chose motorcycles with anti-lock brakes.

Crashes are common in "panic situations" when riders without anti-lock brakes lock up the front wheel, he said.

"It slams the rider to the ground," Wilson said. "Most of the time, you don't get a second chance on a bike."

After speeding, in descending order of frequency of motorcycle crash causes, are: tailgating; improper lane use; careless driving; failure to yield; and an object in the road, state police said.

Kanicki-Wilson said 2004's late-riding season flurry of deaths may also buck normal trends of mostly springtime crashes. May was motorcycle awareness month statewide.

Car drivers, unaccustomed to bikes on the road after winter, often are at fault, she said.

"Although we do tell drivers to be very aware and look for bikes," she said, "now I would suggest for motorcycles to obey the speed limit."

Fielder said he admires motorcycles for their beauty and design, but he won't have to worry about speeding.

The evening Fielder spotted the sun-reflecting handlebar of White's early 1980s Honda, the teen vowed never to mount a motorcycle. He'll even quit riding dirt bikes.

"I'm just fascinated by how they look," he said. "I would never get on one, though." v

well, yeah, you know.. :nonod:
