How fast can you spell sacked???

A controversial NCAA decision restricting Florida State University's use of an American Indian mascot was based on incomplete information and will be reconsidered, a top NCAA official said Thursday.

Walter Harrison, who chairs the committee that approved a policy directed at 18 schools with "hostile and abusive" American Indian mascots, said FSU has "good grounds" to appeal.

Among the reasons, he said, are that the NCAA Executive Committee thought the Seminole Nation of Oklahoma opposed FSU's use of the Seminole image as a mascot.

That was based partly on letters the committee received from David Narcomey, a member of the General Council of the Seminole Nation of Oklahoma.

But Narcomey was not authorized to speak on behalf of the tribal nation and "misrepresented" its view, the tribe's attorney general said Thursday.

In fact, Narcomey pushed for a tribal resolution condemning the use of American Indian mascots and imagery, specifically at FSU. It was defeated last month by an 18-2 vote.

Harrison, flooded with hundreds of e-mails from FSU fans, also said Thursday he wants to better understand FSU's history with the Seminoles.

FSU has vowed to fight the NCAA decision.

Trustees voted Thursday to appeal the rule that, starting February, would bar the use of American Indian symbols at championship events. University president T.K. Wetherell has lined up powerful opposition, including Gov. Jeb Bush, and hired powerhouse lawyer Barry Richard.

Stoooooooopid

stupid stupid stupid. NCAA, spend your time drawing up a playoff system and quit trying to nit-pick. I dont think schools pick mascots on a basis of trying to insult themselves by modeling a feature of something bad. LSU isnt the tigers because tigers are passive, its because theyre fierce. FSU choose the Seminole because they wanted to model thier spirit. Not degrade it. If a native american macot is offensive then so are all mascots. Florida you cant be gators, because gators dont do that chomp thing with thier hands and its insulting to gators. Gimmie a break. Hell, if anything the "fighting irish" is more so, badging a sterotype. Go pick on Notre Dame NCAA. So if mascots are demeaning to the subject, why did the Ole Miss col. Reb get banned? Because they said it glorified the confederacy. So that means mascots are glorifying models. hmmmm they cant be both degrading and glorifying NCAA, but i suppose the NCAA gets to pick and choose. :2cents:

So who's next, AZ State and Duke for using the Devil in their mascot?

How about South Carolina for glorifying illegal chicken fighting "Game Cocks"

How about Tulane, since a "Green Wave" would be bacteria filled water, which could potentially yield harmful amoebas and such.

I think that the rub on tan prima donna guys that you see in the clubs should sue Syracuse for being the Orange Men, since that is clearly offensive to guys with rub on tans.

:disapp: I think it's all stupid......and I apologize in advance if anyone has a stupid brother or relative in and I have offended you too- right Birdman

Its all in fun and nobody is trying to hurt anybody. I really dought that anybody is hurt.
As an Illini, the minority, as usual, is trying to sway what the majority wants. We've been fighting these kinds of things for years. The NCAA is just out of its bounds, and they'll find that out in court :2cents:

the whole thing is frivolous. Who came up with this idea anyway? do the Native Americans even care?
A minority of them do. In all the cases I'm aware of, the Indian tribes have no qualms.

If you've ever been to any sporting event of a team with an Indian mascot, the sheer respect and emotion is evident.

Yeah, kind of like the changes around here to make it more politically correct, heaven forbid someone gets offended...
I wouldn't go that far... we are talking about national govt vs a private owned board... everybody should read the guideline on Free speech/Censorship to get a better idea of the difference...
