Hey guys, I was just invited over here from CF, so I thought I'd go ahead and join.

Anyway, on Friday, I picked up a brand new leftover R6 (for $2100 under the asking price, which was already $800 under MSRP).They wanted to get rid of it, so they practicly gave it away, so I couldn't pass it up. Anyway, I havn't had it out very much obviously since I've had it for 3 days. Anyway, I was wondering if people could help me out with a couple questions.

First, the throttle response seems to be VERY off. It's a 600, so I don't expect power down low, but it seems from about 7000-10000 RPM that it has a very distinct lack of both power and throttle response. It's hard to explain, but when I twist the throttle it seems like the EFI is deciding whether or not to give it fuel. It doesn't seem like an engine deal, it really feels like the computer is just taking it's sweet time to decide what to do. The reason I feel it's the computers is because when I twist it, it doesn't just bog, it just takes a second for anything to happen but then it shoots like a rocket. Is this a computer problem (like an error) or is it the way all R6's are tuned from the factory? It just doesn't seem right, it hasn't got me into trouble yet, but I can picture several situations where choppy throttle response would be very bad.


My second problem is the gearbox, it is a clunky peice of garbage. I love the bike, it's fast (after it decides to be) and it looks awesome, bu the transmission is crap. It's clunky and very notchy. I have never ridden another sportbike, but I have years of dirt experience and I have never seens a tranny this annoying. Not to mention it constantly makes very annoying sounds too. Kinda like a whine, like an electric motor. IS this all a break in thing? After I get say 1000 kms on it, will this crap stop? It's an awesome bike, but these little things are pissing me off. I got a great deal, but I still paid a lot of money to have all these annoyances. Also, they didn't give me a deal because it was a known lemon, because when I picked it up it had 4 kms on it. That tells me that nobody has ever ridden it long enough to know anything was wrong, so I don't think the dealership is purposly trying to drop a lemon on me.

Well, the throttle response is abrupt on my '05, but it doesn't seem to be delayed at the 7-10K area. Now down in the 3-5K area it doesn't have any power, but it's a 600. I can feel a step up at 5K and again around 9K. You might just have to purchase a power commander to smooth things out. As for the tranny, try preloading the shifter before you pull in the clutch. But yes, the trans IS clunky, especially from 1-2. But it is MUCH better if you preload the shifter. If you've never ridden a sportbike, you might just not be used to it. It's a lot different than a dirt bike. Anyway, welcome to the forum.

I've ridden a few R6's and they do have a choppy throttle.
The PCIII will help this in a big way.
The gear box, well its a Yamaha and get use to it. :2cents:
Enjoy the new bike. I think you will love it. Especially for that price. :dthumb:

Wheres the R6 Owners forum Capn? I always find model specific quetions are good to post ont he model specific boards as well, lotsa good info when everyone in the room is familiar with exactly what you are talkin about. Then come back and tell us what they say :lol:

I have owned a lot of yamahas including an r1 right now and its transmission is perfect :tt:

My opinions are just that but its known that Yamaha's are rough on shifting.
Honda, Kawasaki,Yamaha and Suzuki all make great bikes.
Its a very bold statement to say one is better than the other.
Thankfully my ridding friends have a wide variety of taste in bikes and I get to ride so many different bikes at speed.
The few I haven't owned, I get to ride before I decide to buy.
New 05 GSXR 1k coming to the group this week. couple more weeks and Ill give a review.
Personally I think the 600RR has the worst gear box right now.
Not really with shifting but in slack.
Just for the record, the 04 R1 is awesome. I just cant keep the front down coming out of a corner. :2cents:

Thansk for the advice guys. And Cap, I have tried preloading, and it is helping, it's still clunky feeling, but it helped quite a bit. I just came back from a ride and I now have 273 km on it, I am so excited, after school I have been riding almost all the time. I have noticed that with the more miles I put on it, the better the whole package feels. Maybe it just needs to loosen up a bit before all the quirks go away. :seeya:


Now for my second question, is there anything that will allow both lights to stay on with low beams? I ABSOLUTLY HATE the look of one light being on. This morning I rode it to school (and the girls are already loving it BTW :thumbs: ) and when I parked one of them commented that she was suprised that I already had a bulb burnt out on a brand new bike. I explained it to her, and we both think it's BS. Why would they do that? For anyone who doesn't know bikes, it looks liek I am driving a brand new bike with a burnt out headlight. :rant: :cursin:

The trans the my R6 is notchy but I like it. I like to know that the bike is in the gear. As for the power band, you arent got to get anything out of till like 6500 on my bike. I have a stage 3 jet kit and flatsides. The thing is like being lauched out a cannon.

You do NOT have to get the angel eyes, you CAN just order the headlight conversion, which is probably what I'll do. Sure, the angel eyes look sweet, but how often would I really have them on? Only when parked to show it off, and I don't park and show it much because I'm too busy riding it. :D

Yep, similar on my bike. I feel a step around 5K and power keeps climbing to 9K where it jumps again. 9K is my cannon shot, but the bike just pulls from 5 on up.
