Okay folks, here's the deal. A few months ago, I had planned on buying either a 2005 GSXR 600 or an R6. I really liked the red/black bikes in each model and both have very similar performance. However, just a couple months ago, I found out I'm going to be a dad in late May/early June (which is why I most likely won't be able to make the gap trip). Now, since I'm not married to, nor am I planning to marry the woman (we aren't even dating), I'm going to be paying child support. Yes, I will be the best dad I can be, and I love children, but this woman is not someone I want to spend the rest of my life with.

Anyway, before I found out this news, I knew I could easily afford a new bike, however, child support will put a bit of a belt on my budget (don't know exact amount yet). I had then decided to just look for a good used bike (no older than 2001, 99% sure it would be a GSXR) and paint it the colors I wanted since the red/black was not an option before '05.

BUT, I JUST got an unexpected 5K per year raise (today), so I'm thinking that will at least come close to covering child support. So, the question now is do I still buy used, or do I go ahead and buy new as previously planned?

What are the pros and cons of each? Any opinions (on the bike, not the child situation since I already know what I'm doing there) would be greatly appreciated.

Well you could go either way with this. I would wait to see what the support is going to have to be and then make your choice. You may get lucky with a low support amount or she could try to take you for a ***** load.

I would go with the gsxr since I am a gsxr man and I know MP will say R6. But can you blame either one of us. Look at each of us ride. The best thing is to go with what you are going to like and feel good on. You will be able to get either one at a good price if you go used.

And last thing....wear a rain coat. :lol:

Unfortunately, they don't always work, and you can believe me on that. If you don't believe me, ask a friend of mine who had the same thing happen a couple years ago.

Well speaking from experience with DJ, we have 2 kids, and if you can I would just wait until you figure out the support! That would definitely be the best way to go!! This way you can make sure aren't gonna be strapped and you are still able to support the baby. Good Luck with the bike!! Hope you can get what you really, really want!!

I agree, wait to see what the child support nails you for...

But, would usually go for the new bike. They have the best technology and power out. That way you won't be "wanting" for the newer one...for at least a year anyway! Besides, then you can get the colors and whatever you WANT.

Also, the unfortuanate thing about bikes these days is that you can never know about them. You have many squids on bikes these days just trashing them. But then they can go out on EBay buy all the parts to make it "LOOK" good and sell it to you as a great bike, that has never been ragged on... but really it was owned by a stunter and the motor is on it's last legs.... oh and lets not forget to mention that the fork valves are darn near blown and the frame is tweaked!! Go new and be HAPPY!!!

After buying new, I almost wished I had bought used just due to the fact that a bike, any bike, seems to drop a couple thousand dollars with those first hundred miles ya put on er... meaning even a low mileage used bike, yer gonna get bent over if ya need to sell it right away...

Captain, I sat on the red/black busa at the motorcycle show and it was the best looking GSXR I've ever seen. But I wouldn't buy a 600 or buy new. Those 600 engines have to be wound above 7K to really get exciting, which is difficult on most streets. Plus, I sat on a lot of 600's at the show. I'm not that big, but I don't fit on them well.

I would get a used super bike such as a busa, R1 or big CBR because of my size and I like power down low. Also, because of what Pickle said, and just in case the lady has twins. Plus you can get just liability insurance. :2cents:

Keep in mind that your raise will be taken into account for the child support, so it may not help out too much afterall because it will all be figured in.

I agree...wait and see about the child support first and then you'll know more about what you can and cannot afford. If you get the new and then end up not being able to afford it, you'd have to sell it or something. But, if you get the used, then you end up being able to afford more, you'll wish you had. Then again, you can always have some extra money if you go used too.

Thanks for all the advice. It seems the consensus is to wait until the baby is born and support is determined. Unfortunately, that means I won't get a new bike in the spring and I'll have to ride the Kat for a few more months, but I can live with that. I'd hate to be wrong with my decision, and a few more months won't hurt.

No Worries -- I appreciate the advice to go for a bigger bike than a 600, but I'd like to remain within my abilities. Maybe after I've had a few more years experience. I have no problem keeping a 600 revved up if that's what is needed, but I'm not about to go out and buy a busa (wouldn't even if I had the experience cause they don't handle worth a damn from what I've read and heard) or a gixxer 1K. I won't even buy a gixxer 750 until I know that I'm damn good and capable. So a 600 is just fine by me.

Anna -- Yes, I'm well aware that the raise will change the support amount, but she got a new job a month ago, which gave her an increase in pay. It's not quite as much as I got, but it will come close to offsetting my raise. I've run a few government-based child support calculators and the amount hasn't changed much from before both of our raises.

Also, I'd never cheat on you. I had met her first, but we were finished before I met you. Still want to go to Florida? I'm leaving Wednesday.

Capt, the size of the bike has little to do with your expierence...and a GSXR 750 would most likely be perfect for what you're describing. A good medium bike for you.

Well, seeing as how I've only been riding a Kat 600 for a little over a year, I think jumping to a gsxr 750 would still be a HUGE jump in power. I want the better handling of a lighter, shorter bike, but I just don't think I need that much power yet. I'd much rather build up slowly and learn throttle control on a smaller bike, than jump up to a big bike too fast. Sure, maybe I'll wish I'd bought a 750 after a year or two, but I'd much rather have too little power than too much. Regardless of power, I expect to keep the next bike for at least three years. I would feel much too squidish if I jumped from a Kat 600 to a gsxr 750 after only 1 1/2 years.

I pondered this exact same question when I was looking for my bike (minus the whole kid child support thing.... congrats BTW!). First I wanted new, then I swayed towards used, then back to new. I swear I didn't sleep for a week cuz I couldn't decide which way to go. Luckily I did have it narrowed down to exactly which kind of bike I wanted, so I just had to find the right one. After lots of number crunching to make sure I could afford it no prob, I decided on a new one for several reasons. One was just because it was 'new' and I could afford it, LOL. But like mentioned above, I worry too much about it's previous life.... I see the way people ride these things and can't help but wonder just what it's been through. Being an auto mechanic myself, I'm quite consious about stuff like break-in period, maintence, not beating the crap out of it, etc. When it comes to break-in and maintence and everything, I want to do things myself my way, that way I know it's done on time and it's done right.... no worries. Same way with cars... I work at a Ford/Lincoln/Mercury dealer and see Mustangs/SVT Cobras, and F-150 SVT Lightnings come in on trade. They look nice and have low mileage, but go for a drive and you can tell right away that it's had the living crap beat out of it. The last Lightning we had only had 39k miles, and even with a chip and all those goodies it was still just plain worn out. Alot of people buy a high performance car/truck for the sole purpose of racing it and beat the crap out of it, same with a sportbike. Hell I've seen people buy brand new mustangs and take them up to the dragstrip brand new. Yea, that's good for break in! :nonod: Ahhh... I'm rambling on again!! Anyways, back to the point. I figured I'd have to finance either way whether I went new or used, so I factored in the warranty, the comfy seat (although kinda ugly) on the '04's, and the 'starting from scratch' factor, and decided to buy a new one. It's worked out good for me so far, but it's different for everyone and their situations, so just look at both, do some number crunching and see what you are comfortable with and go from there.

I just saw a post in another thread that mentioned that Suzuki gave GM discounts starting in June. Now, I don't know if that is a continuing thing, or if it was just a one time offer. But if it's continual, then I will certainly be buying new, because I have almost 3K in GM points and don't plan on using it on a cage anytime soon.
