Hi, my name is Tim and i'm a 20 y/o from central IN. I'm 6', 150lbs and have experience with dirtbikes but never rode a street bike. I am looking to get a bike this spring as it is not very good riding condition in IN right now. I'm looking for some advice on which bike to start with and also looking for other riders in my area. I live in Logansport. Any help woould be greatly appreciated, thanks.

How did you come to clicking onto TWF?

A SV650s seems to be the #1 choice to recommend. Do a search on that on TWF. Or just browse thru threads in the Beginner's Corner and you'll find tons of info and recommendations!

I always give this question alot of thought with the info given and i always end up recomending the SV. So i will do it again. :) And at 150lbs you may just be the right weight for the soft suspension. (which is consistently mentioned as the only real prob with the bike)

But :welcome: and post up!

Welcome. I'm down in Terre Haute, IN and I get up to Indy quite a bit. Never been to Logansport though. How much riding experience do you have? Granted, street riding and dirt riding are very different. A 600 or smaller would be a wise start. The SV650 is a twin, so the power curve is very different than that of an inline-4 600cc bike. My theory is that it's much better to start small and work your way up. I would highly recommend that you buy a used bike first and get to know how street bikes handle. Gear is extemely important. I always say that if you can't afford to buy the proper gear, then you can't afford the bike. I would also suggest that you attend a riding school as well. Proper instruction will do you more good than a bigger bike. Keep us updated, and feel free to ask questions. Just be prepared for the answers that you may not want to hear.

Thanks for all the advice guys. I have heard about the SV650s and have been looking into them however i am having no luck finding a used one in my area. Just outside of town we have a place called Redline Motorsports (redlinemotorsports.biz) they have a decent selection of wrecked or "layed down" bikes, most of the damage is cosmectic only and i figured this would be a good place to start with one of the 600, and since the bikes have already been layed down no worries when i enevitably do the same.

BTW i am a 2wheel tuner magazine reader and that is how i came to this forum.

Hey I purchased some stuff from them through eBay! They have great customer service! I thought Logansport sounded familiar. If I didnt get a "good deal" on my bike, I was going to go the SV route. But at least you already have some experience on 2 wheels. I recommend that you take the MSF course in your area.

The big thing about the salvage bikes is the ability of being able to get that title cleared after repairs... Snad could tell you more about this!!!!

First: :welcome: to TWF timbo:twfrox:
Second: Take the MSF class. Click here and here for your state.
Third: Get a used bike first.

If your considering a salvage bike. Ask the salvage yard about helping you get it inspected and recertified with your state. They can help explain the rules and regs and maybe do it for you. Just remember a salvage bike has a low resale value. Don't over pay and don't expect to sale for full market value when the time comes.

:withstupi I can tell you all about trying to get restored-salvage titles...biggest PITA depending on the original condition of the bike.

Wow, my bike looks so much different then the naked version now. I still like both, but it's been awhile since I have seen the naked version. I actually saw a SVS that some girl had painted pink the other day. It was the older rounded frame SV, but was definitely different looking in pink.

Timbo, try www.cycletrader.com as well. They usually have a ton of SVs.
