i have been lurking around the boards for a while and decided to become a member. i have used the search button to look for certain topics i am wondering about, but didnt really have my question answered.. or i just wasnt looking in the right place.. I will be new to riding next year and I WILL be taking the training course.. with that said I'm looking to go big and buy all my equipment @ once. I have been looking into ICON they seem good and reviews seem to put them in good standing, also alpinestar was in there but icon was a little more on the conservative side for pricing. I have checked boots and if im goin to be driving basically back and forth to work and other rides with friends do i need them? i will be getting jacket, gloves, helmet, and mabey boots. Other question was, do i need pants? well im goin to work so i obviusly cant be riding naked, but do i need leather pants? sorry it was such a long post but thank you in advance for taking the time to look at it and answer! thank you

First off welcome to TWF and glad to see your not stalking er' ah I meen lurking anymore. It always nice to have new posters on the site.
Any way I would say to boots you can get away with a good over the ankle leather boot. Riding boots will be nice for those days you get just to ride. And as far as pants. I wear Jeans never shorts. I dont edorse this just saying what I wear. (25 years riding) not like that makes me immune to a crash but I dont know your ability. Only you can answer that. Any Idea what bike you would like? Let us know if its up in the air let us give some feed back there as well. We are a diverse group a lot of good Ideas and opinions will come across the table with us. :dthumb:
But most of all stick around and pick up tips and chat with the forums.

:welcome: Diamond stick around because :twfrox:
Safety is really important and you should buy whatever you want protected. You should find alot of this info in the beginner section.
You don't NEED leather riding pants, however it would be the best protection. I would recommend riding boots or some sort of boot that will atleast go above the ankle. I picked up a pair of Nitro V boots on clearence this year at my local bike shop this summer for $60 or $70 which really isn't bad.
You should shop for your gear and look for the best price before you buy. I always look online first for closeout items.

SVupON1,

How do you like your Nitro V boots. I was looking at a pair on the bay. Did you see the link I out up the other day. Let me know what you think. If you need the link again I will post it. The price is just too good for a non racer to have added protection for some recreational riding. :2cents:

I really like the Nitro V boots. They are comfortable, and they breate deicently. The one thing that I don't like and I'm sure other boots are the same way..The bottoms are VERY soft and the bottom outter edge of the boots in the front and rear have a few chunks take out already. This only happens when I was scraping my pegs and dragging my knees. I don't think you ride like this earl so you should be ok on this. On a scale 1-10 I would choose 8. Then again look how cheap I got them for...great price!

I didn't see the link you posted...post it up again and I will take a look at it.

seems concesnus with Icon is hit and miss. One product will be quality, while another not as much. ive experienced both. neo-Daytona leather jacket-HIT! Super Duty gloves-MISS! As for boots, i use my calf high work boots. Theyre fine for everyday. And i dont have to lug them around just to ride to work.

I picked ICON Helmet, pants, and textile jacket, Alpinestars for the Gloves and Boots. If you're thinking about buying a bike also, a lot of dealers will throw in gear at cost. I haggled dealer managers until I got the best deal and THEN got my gear at cost also...
Whatever way you go, wear good gear. I'll be getting leathers next year for racing (track, 1/4 mile). Good luck and ride safe!

I would get more into the bike then the gear to match. It is hard to put a real check list of gear up untill you know what you will be on. Just my :2cents:

I only have 1,000 or so miles and I can tell you that I have come across people who have laid their bikes down with shorts and tennis shoes on and it is not a good thing :nonod: . Whatever you do, NEVER wear tennis shoes and shorts while riding. As for myself I wear alpinestars leathers, boots the works and I am very comfortable in them (except for the really hot days) but hey, sweat wipes off and road rash doesnt. I started riding with a set of leather boots that I had in the closet and I had a hard time shifting and such so I purchased some A*s for riding and they are great. Again I am new but one last thing ride within your abilities when you are with your friends. Thats it for me just my :2cents: .

:welcome: :twfrox:

One last thing, take the MSF course, I have already used what I learned from the course to save my ass.
