Okay, I am a person thats really interested in getting started in street riding. I have raced dirtbikes ever since I was 7(woods racing). I was wondering how much my experience on dirtbikes will actually benefit me riding on the street.

Secondly, I am really curious about counter steering. I just want to clarify exactly what this is. For example, if I wish to turn right very quickly, I would actually push the right side of the handlebars. This would in effect steer the wheels out from directly under the bike. But really my question occurs after this. Do I then turn into the direction I wish to go. Like after I have pushed on the right side of the bars, do I then go ahead and turn them right? This allows the turn to take place much more rapidly than waiting on gravity to have an effect on your lean with the bike?

Thanks in advance, sorry for my ignorance. Would rather understand what I am getting myself into.

If you rode dirt for as long as you say you have. You already know about counter steering. That experience will help you in knowing the controls and basics of ridding but that's about as far as it goes. Its a whole different world and will take some serious adjusting to curb dirt habits and mold them into street ridding.

Funny thing is, I don't really even understand counter steering. I don't know if its subconcious or what, but I just don't get it. =/ Its rather annoying, I have raced dirtbikes for 11+ years, and I don't get it. It doesn't help matters that my turning mostly occurs at low speeds, where counter-steering doesn't occur. Woods racing is a lot tighter, and slower than motocross for example. I am guessing its just subconcious then.

Woops forgot to add, the only thing I could really compare it to is setting up to take an inside line through a turn. By this I just steer to the outside of the corner(right) then cut hard left. If its slick and I am holding enough speed I just lean to the inside and keep steering towards the outside. The only logic I can put behind this is you're not really steering right, it just so happens that when your bike is leaning very far in the direction you wish to go, steering right is actually steering exactly where you want to go. If you have ever watched Super Moto racing, thats the best example of this. My apologies, just really hard to word my thoughts when it comes to this since I don't have any direct experience in it. Check out the link below, and tell me if thats counter-steering, if it is, I have always done it, and its just a natural instinct now. Appreciate the help. Its just confusing because if you take into account the lean of the bike, you're not really steering in the opposite direction.

just lean into the turn and and the bike will go that way. If you are going into a left turn then lean to the left and push down on the left grip. Same with the right turn push down on the right grip and lean to the right.

At its most extreme. You should hope to never get that far out on a street bike.

that would be counter steering AND backing it in. The simplest exp. of CS ive heard is basically youre making the bike want to fall over. If youre going fast enough, it wont fall, just turn. usually you do it unintentionally, then when you recognise it you can intentionally use it to really throw the bike down along with your lean.

and :welcome: if i havent already.

If you are real nervous about counter steering, take the MSF basic rider course. They walk you through the whole thing. You probably already do it subconsciencely. The MSF course isn't something to be embarrassed about taking even with the amount of riding you have done. My class was half filled with complete noobs and half filled with 15-20 year street veterans trying to get the insurance discount. The vets all said they learned something from it too. It's a really good course and everyone including your fellow classmates will help you out as much as they can. Everyone recommends it, I can't believe no one has yet in this thread.

Gotcha guys, really appreciate it. The more I think about it the more I realize I counter-steer on a dirtbike. Especially in Texas races and races with grass tracks. I just never really thought about it, and it felt natural. Thanks a lot for the help guys. Sorry, dont wanna be too much of a :whore:

As long as it productive. :whore:

I know a few here that can break it down and give you the scientific definition and explain it in practical terms. Stick around and you will get a better answer. Maybe not tonight but eventually cause :twfrox:
