Im surprised at the number of bikes that do not have a fuel gauge or even a low fuel indicator. Since Im used to cars that have both, how the heck am I supposed to know to when to get gas? I know about the fuel regulator that has the reserve tank option, but I dont wanna be doing 80 on the highway and realize all of a sudden that Im outta gas. I also dont wanna be counting miles when im supposed to be enjoying them. Is there a way to "rig" a low fuel indicator or something? :help:

Dude it could just be me, but I don't have any of that stuff you talked about, nor do I have a fuel reserve switch. Atleast you have something to help. I just watch the miles.
What? An '02 Triumph without fuel indication? That's surprising.

As far as the original question, Once you figure out the max milage, substract 15 or 20 and there is your fuel indicator. My Vulcan didn't have anything but a reserve on the Petcock valve. I knew at 125 miles I needed to look for a station or she would start sputtering out. Had it happen several times on the highway, reach down and turn the knob. If it dies you just clutch it in and hit the starter. (or pop the clutch). I never thought it was that big of deal.

bmp... I understand the enjoyment factor...but it is what most of us have had to deal with. Now most of the newer FI bikes have a fuel light.... it comes on and blinks depending on how low your fuel is.

What surprises me is my SV has a indication light the starts blinking when I have like a gallon left and stays on when i get to half a gallon, but a katana has the full fuel gauge. Guess since it is more of a tourer you get the extras.

Exactly that... that light is the same thing they use on all the sportbike suzuki's....

I can't see why they don't put gas guages or lights on some models. Its not like it weighs a lot or takes up tons of space... Same thing with a blinker light, you know how stupid people look with their blinker on for miles? Not to mention how dangerous it is...

The FZ has an awesome fuel guage. It has a digital gauge with 6 bars and decreases down to one bar (obviously) but then after you go a while the bar will start flashing indicating you have 1 gallon left and a trip(fuel) odometer turns on and tells you how far you've gone since it started blinking. What's nice is this is a seperate trip odometer than the manual reset one. And actually there is two manual reset ones, which I only use for trip totals.

Maybe this is how all the new FI's are now but I sure dig it :dthumb:

My R6 doesn't have a guage but it does have 2 trips and an "F" trip which, along with the fuel light, will come on to let me know how many miles I've gone since the light came on. Basically Fuel the **** up. I've yet to run out of gas. the thing that always pissed me off about my buddy is that even though he had a fuel light he ran out of gas at least once evry two weeks. No bull either... he was always broke.

back in the day on the ole CX500 with no trip meter, light, or gauge... i had to shake the bike and listen to the gas in the tank before every ride to know when to fill up. i walked for gas alot anyway.

I don't need and don't want a gauge on my Sport Bikes. They can put'em on Cruisers or Sport Tourer all they want.
I cant imagine any bike on the road today with out some sort of indicator. Whether it is a dummy light, gauge or reserve on the petcock. :2cents:

Why would you NOT want one??? Such a discrete little thing that can save your butt.

That's strange being that our bikes are built on the same base, your's is just jacked up on steroids and plastic, haha. I guess the guage cluster is probably a little different tho huh?

Ill stick with the dummy light that weighs to much as it is for a Sport Bike. Don't want a gauge that weighs even more.

Seriously,
On the bikes that Iv had in the past. The dummy light is more effective at telling my fuel level than any gauge has ever been. I was perfectly happy with the reserve petcocks. Temporarily running out of gas at speed was only a real issue while dragging a knee. The rest of the time. It is a simple as turning the petcock to reserve and stopping at a gas station soon.
