I try really hard not to get sucked up into the great oil debate. It's one of those issues where there are too many right answers. Here's my $.02...
Make sure you use a motorcycle specific oil, it has additives to deal with shear forces of the transmission (the oil bathes the engine, clutch, and trans on most bikes). Personally, I like synthetics...especially in engines that tend to run hot or spend a lot of time at high rpm. The best weight to use is what the manufacturer recommends although you can modify your choice depending on the conditions you ride in. For example, in really cold weather, you are going to want a lower viscosity so the oil circulates more quickly when cold.
