I heard from a friend who works at a place that we've all heard of, and he was saying that they've got their own performance piece that works as the Power Commander does, but directly into the bike's ECU. He said that the PCIII tend to lose their maps after 5K miles or so. Anyone else had that problem? I trust him, but I think my wife is getting me a PCIII for my bday in a couple of weeks.

Any thoughts?

I've not heard of a PCIII "losing" its map...
IMHO, a PowerCommander is worthless without a custom map for YOUR bike done by a competent shop. EVERY bike is different. Even two models with the exact same mods are different. You might make your bike less lean in some areas with a PCIII and an "off the shelf" map, but why shell out the money to do a half ass job?

#1 - They don't "lose maps". That is a bunch of BS. It's a solid state component, with a type of flash memory in it.

#2 - Most people couldn't tell the difference between a "custom map" and an "Off the shelf" one. You're talking about such minor performance gains in most cases that it's really not necessary, and couldn't be discerned outside of a dyno sheet. Unless their bike is vastly different than a stock bike (different cams, for example), you're talking about a 1% difference in performance, maybe. While we do custom mapping for race bikes, most street guys really do not need to shell out the money for the Dyno time.

Well, if we're talking street bike that doesn't have any issues to begin with, what's the point of the PC at all then? Looking at the gains the newest 600s are getting with an aftermarket pipe and PCIII map, they're only gaining 1 or 2 hp. Again, I don't see the point.

I went with a PCIII and map for my Tuono because I made a drastic exhaust change (Akra full 2-2 system from the stock 2-1). Even though the system came with a chip, the chip is actually designed for a Mille and thus was not ideal for the Tuono. Almost too rich... Plus, the map ended up getting me a 10% peak change in torque and 9% in hp.

IMHO, a PCIII for a street bike is to merely get better air/fuel ratio and make the bike run as well as possible. Every bike produced today has more than enough power for the street from the factory.

Also true, unless you're racing and it will make a difference. Before, you used to be able to get 5% - 8% out of a good full system and PCIII. Now ... the stock exhaust systems are getting to the point where you're only going to see a 3 - 4% increase (talking about the '05 600cc models specifically. The 1000s we still see a pretty big gain with a full system and PCIII). A slip-on almost does as well.

I completely agree ... but most young males aged 18-25 do not :D

I know alot of people that just go with a slip on and stock everything else.

If you want to be faster in the twisties you are actually better off to spend your money on your suspension. Besides, most of today's bikes have soo much power on tap that it's crazy!

My biggest complaint (only one, really) with the '05 1K, is the "funky" jetting down low when you're trying to finesse your way around a parking lot or in town with the stop-n-go's betweewn lights. If you're not paying attention, it'll hit that off-idle stumble and want to stall.

While the money for a PCIII may seem a bit steep for such a "small" but irritating problem, i also don't plan on leaving it stock for too long. I have access to a dyno and the whole set up for custoim mapping, but it's going to wait until the budget sees fit. Therefore, the PCIII would just be the investment needed for future mods, and current fix.

Do they have a plug in box that stay on the bike or are they wanting to reflash the stock ECU with new custom map ? :scratch:

Unfortunately, I was at work and couldn't talk long enough, but it sounds like they reflash the ECU and you get the "tools" to put back to stock if you want. I think I'll go down and see more about it after a ride on Saturday.

well i have an 06' 1000, i used to race (read be a backmarker) in the ama for about 5-6 races a season, so i do know how to use most of my dynoed 178rwhp, that being said my speeding days are #'ed and i enjoy my bike for what it is...fun, i dont use all its hp, no reason to, i have a 10second mustang, and probably would do just fine on a 600, but there is still an air of coolness knowing that with all the unknown goodies on my bike (stock looking side from pipe) its fun knowing i ride a street legal machine that is quicker to 180mph than 99.9% of the vehicles in production! thats why i still mod my bike!!! ITS FUN, remember when we did stuff for fun, not to prove whos faster or whos...pipes...so to speak are bigger, just for fun!!!:dthumb:
