My son, who has become fascinated with two wheels since I started riding, wants a pocketbike. He's been wanting one since they came out but I was a little reluctanct due to his age. He's 10 now and I am considering joining a local club that will allow his to race during the spring/summer, indoor/outdoor. I don't know much about them but am looking for any recommendations you might have with regard to a "starter pocketbike".

I have looked at brands and was leaning towards a Euro manufacturer but this is where the confusion begins..... Are there reco's for hp - 4 vs. 7 (less/more), air cooled vs. liquid cooled for racing (prefer the latter), are they all two stroke, any models with restricters???? I want to start him on somthing a little tame as he will upgrade as his skills progress (no previous experience) but I don't want junk as it needs to be able to sustain a race season.

I would probably start with a cheapy from Pep Boys until he showed he was truly interested. Sometimes kids beg, plead and promise until they skin their knee and then they don't seem to want it quite so bad...I would start on something cheap, and you can always upgrade...

I have a 4 year old who has learned to pedal her bike and is flying. she is out on the dirt road every night racing up and down, sliding to a stop, slinging the back end around, she went to school today with some rash after she went off the ramp the 10 and 12 year boys built and she crashed...I told her I would get her a dirt bike when she learned to ride her bicycle without the training wheels...She has picked out a 50 Honda, or a KTM 70, she hasn't made up her mind yet... :nonod: ... :help:

Sounds like my daughter (age 6)....She learned to ride without training wheels a few years ago and immediately began riding like her brother attempting tricks and what not. My son isn't really the type to shy away from something if he gets hurt. He is more of the "always wanting to do something" type of kid. I am sure he is more then interested as he constantly rationalizes why I should allow him to ride his uncles as well as his cousin's. Furthermore, I get a kick out of watching them both (son & daughter) build makeshift motorcycles in their rooms leaning side to side making vroom vroom noises. In any event, I'll probably settle for one in the mid-range and start from there.

PPPPSSSSSTT....don't forget to buy one you can ride too...
That was my original plan (to buy me one). I was out looking at a few with the family a month or so ago and wife questioned why I wanted one. Well, I told her sometimes you want to have something to play around with (also consider racing CRF50's) and it's coming out of my pocket. So now I have an even better excuse to get two instead of the one (originally)....

You can get a cheap china CAG from wherever you want, EBay would be a good place to start.... don't pay much more than $225 and keep a eye on the S&H prices...they try to rob you on that...
