One time, I went to a Yamaha dealer and asked a mechanic if he would recommend synthetic oil for my 2001 R1. He recommended just regular Yamaha oil instead of synthetic. what do you guys think? I have like 10200 miles on it. He also said it can also affect the performance of the clutch. I'm new to my bike. bougth it Oct. of last year from a friend.

IDK what to tell you. Just do a search on this site foe many informative threads about this.
The debate about synthetic vs. conventional oil is never ending. There are some synthetic oils that can effect the clutch. Just like there are some conventional oils that will effect it also.

I would say put in what ever your manual calls for.
