I'm thinking about buying a 2000 R1 and would like to ask a couple of questions. First, what are the major differences between the year models? Secondly, I'm looking at a R1 with 6000 miles on it, everything is great except that it has no rear brake, needs bleeding, a master cylinder or something. The bike has been in storage for the most part since 2001 but it idles nicely except for a bit of overly rich fluffiness down in the low rpm {below a 2000 grand}, he said that it was due to the jetting and the fact that he had removed the stock exhaust {and it's valve} and replaced it with a Acropovic {spelling?} BTW, he said it dynoed something like 142 with the pipe and rejetting. Is 4000 bucks a good price?

I know R1s are known for tank slappers. I would like to buy a steering damper for it and was wondering what would be a good pick taking cost into consideration. I'm just getting back into bikes after quite a hiatus {10 years} and I was also wondering about some good online aftermarket sites. I will be looking for some wheels {light weight, no bling} and maybe a few other things {sprockets, chain, tires and that sort of stuff}. Maybe some light weight nut and bolt kits {aluminum and Titanium}.

Sorry for the book of questions, I know these type questions have been pounded into the ground but I'm just looking to get up to speed quickly

I cant say a lot about the bike and the deal. But I paid $4000. for a 2001 fz1 in mint condition. Needed nothing. Had a slip on and titanium bars already. Low miles. You have to be sure everyting is right for you. Look more into why no rear brakes and why parked so long? These two things might steer youe away, never know. Just be sure your get the whole truth of the bike and if the deal looks good I say go for it. Get it fixed up and you should anjoy it for years to come. I have been off bikes for quite a while myself then the wife from out of know where wanted a sport bike for the two of us. The FZ1 or Suzuki bandit 1200 was going to be it. She founsd The FZ1 and the rest is history that I dont regret. Good luck, :dthumb:

My friend has a 2001 R1 and it had the same rear brake problem - cost him like $50 to fix it.. He rode for like a year with no rear brake..

Are we to assume that what is possible and what is good advice are the same. Your right One can ride without a rear brake. But should we advise it to be ok to do? I would say the bike is still a good deal but I would get it repaired before I found out the front brake really needed some work also. It has been sitting for four years for some reason and a $50.00 repair just dont make enough sence. :2cents:

I know the guy who is selling it and he is selling because of lack of interest. The rear brack issue shouldn't cost alot, at the most I'll have to replace the master cylinder. The rear brake thing is odd, he had not cranked the bike in about a year and the battery was dead, bought a new battery and beleive it or not, it cranked right up. I figured the gas would have been bad and it might have clogged up the carbs but no,,, it runs fairly well {excepting the low rpm fluffiness}. It apparenty just went bad sitting. Maybe air is in the line or corrosion from water condesation??

In any event, I will fix the rear brake. I drive on gravel and grass too much not to have a rear brake. Plus, once I get back to my old self riding wise, I trail brake a bit with the rear at times.

The topic has been discussed throughly.... I will always say go with a Scotts Steering Stabalizer. In my :2cents: they are the best... but you can't go wrong with many others such as Ohlins.

Welp, I went over to my friends and worked on the R1. Bled the brakes and bingo,,,, no more problems. Washed it up and added some SeaFoam {actually a whole can} to the year old gas and drove it about an hour or so. I think {could be placebo} that some of the low rpm fluffiness has gone away. We will see for sure Friday when I pick it up.

BTW, I bought a set of "Z" leathers from his brother. They have been down but I bought some dye and I've got them presentable. They are two piece which will kill two birds with one stone since I need a jacket for scootering around town. Paid 150 bucks for them,,,, not bad since they were something like 1100$ new I think.

Welp, after Murphy did his level best to prevent me from getting the bike, I finally have it. One last present from Murphy though, the guy's brother went out to crank it today before I came over to pick it up and flooded it {I think, it could have been me too}. In any event, I had my first remove, clean and replacing of fouled plugs on it today. Despite the flooding incident, I still got in about 70 miles of riding today in the N. Ga. mountains. All I can say is that,, it's good to be on a bike again!!

BTW, I lied to ya'll. I had the model year wrong, it's a 99 model.
