I just found out I'm deploying over to the desert for 4 months. Anybody have any recommendations as to what I should do to my bike before I leave? Disconnect the battery...anything?

depends on the area you live in and climate as well..if you have someone you trust that could keep an eye on it for you, maybe ride it now and then, that would be ideal..but if not, I would..

pull the battery
pull the plugs, stick alittle oil down in there to keep everything lubed up
put it on a bike stand if you can
put a bottle of stabil in the gas tank

What Matt says. You may also want to get the gas out of the carb(s). If you can run the engine with the gas supply set to off, the engine will use up most of the gas in the carbs. If not, you should drain the floats using the screw plug on the bottom of the carbs. :luck: in the desert.

Maybe put the battery on a tender also to keep it charged. Batteries drain during non-use. I wouldn't say a whole "bottle" of stabil - just follow the directions on the bottle. Definately get the tires off the ground with a front and rear stand or center stand - avoids flat spots. Not sure about the oil in the plug area but if Matt says so then the jacketless wonder must know something I don't? What is the purpose of that? You say "lubed" up? So it doesn't rust?

Some folks / books say change the oil before storage and again before taking out of storage. Not sure what that does except cost you money. I change the oil right after taking out of storage so it is fresh for the new riding season. Also make sure if you live in a cold weather climate you put anti-freeze back in if you were running wetter or water in the summer. Don't want that block cracked.

Ive heard from several people that if you pull out the plugs, and just dip your finger in oil, around the threads of the spark plug inserts and let it drip down inside the engine, that it will help when you go to start it up, as far as minor wear from sitting so long and then starting up and grinding metal on metal ?

yes, no, maybe so ?

Makes sense to me. I wasn't questioning you, I just never heard of that and wondered what the purpose was. Inquiring minds want to know. You learn something new every day I reckon.

Oil Change

the idea of the oild change BEFORE storage is b/c oil after use can become slightly acidic... just easier on everything to avoid that situation.. but chaigng it after would be pointless isnce its unused oil... i dont go on the 3mo/3000 hting... oil doesnt go bad.....its not a Tweenky...wait those dont expire either... k its not milk. I changed mine before sotrage but it has aobut 3,500 miles on the opil.. needs the change anyways, i try to do it bout 2 times as often as the manual calls for. just ofr protection to reduce wear

I run Amsoil in the bike during riding season and I put straight Kaw oil in the winter. I'll start up the bike in the spring to warm it up and then drain that "new" oil. What do I care, it's not that much money!
