Can anyone reccomend a reputable SV mechanic in south orange county? I just bought an 02 SV650S and I'm already having a problem with it. It won't start. Doesn't even turn over. When I first got the bike it rode home fine, rode it around my house then went home. Shut it off. Fired it up, went to my parents house and when I tried to leave there it wouldn't start. Put it in second rolled down the hill and jumped it and it ran. I was trying to determine what was up so I turned it off again only to get the same problem. I shifted the position of the bike a few feet, and it started perfectly. So I took it home, cutoff the engine and it happened again. Shifted it again, started fine. I did that about 3 times and now it won't even start at all, even after moving the bike. I'm not mechanically inclined with bikes at all, this is a my first bike. So I want to have someone look at it and also tune the bike up, it has 3800 miles right now.

Anyone have suggestions?

Almost sounds like a twitchy engine shut off switch to me. Try messing with it a bit and see if you can get it to go from starting to not strating. Also try the same with the sensor on the kickstand.

I believe the SV also has a wire to the clutch lever that will prevent it from starting...It does sound like a kill switch wire is grounding...

Not sure about the SV but It may not run in gear with the Kickstand down are you sure the bike is not in gear with the kick stand down? Mine wont run that way either. If it does have the kickstand safty switch and the kickstand is up then check that switch for a defect such as sticking.:scratch:

I don't have any experiance working on bikes. I think you're right about the twitchy shut off switch. It's gotta be something thats moving around because the bike was starting after it was moved.

So with these ideas...

Put the bike in nuetral, and with the clutch lever pulled in and try to start it with both the kickstand down and up.

You may want to simply pull the wire off the kickstand sensor and try cleaning the connection. But I'm with these guys I think it is just something simple like one of these many motor kill sensors!

check the battery cables under the seat......I see more loose battery cables cause your type of problem than anything else working here at a dealership.

It's not really South County,but Mach 1 in Costa Mesa/Newport Beach (17th or 19th St. can't remember for sure :lol: ) is my mechanic, and he is truly one of the best around and won't screw you over.

He use to be the head mechanic for O.C. Suzuki and then started his own business. :dthumb:

The headlight comes on when i turn the igintion on, all electrical seems to be fine. I just don't get any turnover at all when i try to hit the starter.

Ok, figured out the problem. It was the clutch safety switch. The connections had come loose and weren't making contact with the female plug. Since I had no idea how to replace/didn't have the part I bypassed it and wired the two together. Then I soldered the tips and put a cap on it. Works fine now.

You could try to start the bike in gear and forget. Then the bike would lurch forward if not actually start and possibly fall. Messing up the bike and anything it hits or falls on.

If it doesn't look bad enough to bother you, or anything like that, and you brand it into your head that you need to always pull in your clutch to start, then I can't see any downsides. But like jeeps said, don't pull the clutch in and you may have a spill..

I always pull in the clutch when I start the bike, I'm used to my car where the car won't even start unless you have the clutch in. So in my mind it's always "clutch in."

I should be fine.
