i have owned 3 bikes since i was 18 (i'm 30 now) and was wondering how i should calculate the # of years riding experience i have. do you count the years in between that you haven't owned a bike as well, or just the ones that you have? i have had the skills and the class M endorsement the entire time, i just haven't always had the opportunity to use them. i am curious what you all think because i don't want to misrepresent myself.

I would put more emphasis on mileage ridden as opposed to # of bikes owned and how many years. I am currently riding my 3rd bike in 3 years but still consider myself a newbie since I've only put up around 10k miles during the time. My 03 636 barely broke 5k miles.

:iagree: Years is only important to the insurance company.

Your true experience will come from mileage through any and all circumstances like city, country, twisty, night and rain.

If you have off time like a year or so with out a bike to ride when you want. That will count against you. I took some time off after two serious injuries in one year. It felt like I had to start learning at about the middle all over again. It took me about 3000 miles just to get close to where I felt I left off. I also had age and the remembrance of pain to help keep me slow.

As long as you keep that frame of mind, you will do fine. :dthumb: I'm always learning every time I get on a bike after many years of experience. :yesnod:

I'm with Jeeps on this... heck even after i would whip out the bike in the spring you can feel that you're a little rusty... it only lasts a few rides but still.... Its more about the miles...

couple weeks ago, when the CCT was bad, was the first time in Months I havent ridden my bike daily (it was sitting for a week or so). I went out for my first ride and I felt awkward for the first hour. I always think in my mind there is something to learn everyday on the road.

:iagree: its much like how pilots are gauged...with their hours flown instead of years flying.
