Ok...I am going out of my mind here. I am in the market for a bike to replace my SV. Anyone that knows anything about the 2003 Yamaha YZF R1..POST UP!!

This is the deal...I met a guy that races his SV and bought SV parts from me last week. He asked me what kind of bike I am looking at moving into next and I told him a 04 R6, he said what about a R1.

As most of you guys know I've been wanting an R1 forever now. He has a 2003 Liquid Silver YZF R1 that has always been garage kept, never been down, never scratched, never rode hard (the guy is 44), 2,100 miles. He said he will sell it to me for $6500.00. He said he just doesn't have time to ride it with being busy at work, and racing the SV his wife asked him to sell it if he's not going to ride it.

I talked to him again last night about the R1 and he said he's not advertising it, and he doesn't care if he sells it, or keeps it forever. I looked on a nationwide search on traderonline for 03 YZF R1 and none of them were this cheap...all of them were up in the $7k-9k range.
The guy told me it will be there for when I want to take it out on a test ride. I think I want to wait until january ..offer him 6k, put $1000 down, that way I am only financing $5000.00 i have no clue if he will accept that tho.

i am suppose to be getting pics on the bike soon...when the guy returns from Turkey...he just left today...he's the president of a audio company..so he's out of town alot.

If any of you know anything about the 03 R1...post up. i just want specs, reliable....

Sounds like a really good deal! I'd take that for sure!
I think I will jump on this once I can sell the SV frame. That lein release for my SV should be in my mailbox this week.

Yeah, I'd definately jump on that. Everyone I know that has an R1 likes it, there doesn't seem to be any major problems with them that I know of.
I have heard a lot of people complain about the front end being very light.

people talk of a nervous front end but that may have left with the previous generation. Give 'er a ride.
I think they guy has a 1/2 steering damper on it...he said he's missing one piece for it tho.

I have the June, 2002 issue of Motorcyclist where they test the 954RR, 9R, R1 and Gixxer. The R1 didn't change until '04 so it should be the same as the '03. I guess you know this is a race bike. It has a fierce engine, superb brakes, and the nicest fit and finish. The bad: a buzzy engine and race-track ergos. The Suzuki won and the R1 tied with the Honda for second, but they were all pretty close. The 9R was the best streetbike.

The front ends on the R1's are known for being loose. Nothing a Scotts steering stabalizer won't fix!
I'm not sure which stabalizer he has..its either a scotts or GPR. He's missing a bracket for it though.

  • 2003 Gear Ratio - 1st Gear 35/14 (2.500)
  • 2004 Gear Ratio - 1st Gear (2.533)
  • 2006 Gear Ratio - 1st Gear 38/15 (2.533)
 That doesn't like a real big difference.
