As many of you have probably heard..The green bay packers have lowered their american flag, at Lambeau field, to half staff to honor Reggie White. Do you agree with this or not.

Personally, I dont have a problem with it. The american flag is for every american citizen, it represents our freedoms and what our country stands for. You don't have to be a veteran or current military person to have the right to have the flag flown at half staff for you. We're all important in this country, if you ask. Yes i am as patriotic and love this country as much as anybody, my dad is 25 years retired navy, so I know what it's all about and understand it. I can see the point of view of the veterans who don't agree with flying the flag for reggie in this manner...kind of.

If they wanna honor a member of thier organization and thier community in this manner, I just don't see a problem with it. He was an american too, just like you and me.

Just lookin for your thoughts.

now Im trusting you people to debate this with self-control. ;)

I don't see a problem with it either. It's only 1 flag, in 1 small town, in the country. The city and the fans loved him, the NFL loved him, and he meant alot to the League. It's not like the President is ordering the nation to do it or anything.

If they wanna do it, let them do it. I read about this as well today on the net and heard about it on the radio. Lots of people are offended by it, but I just don't see the big deal..if the packers wanted to do it, fine with me..if they didn't do it, no big deal either.

Just my :2cents:

I agree..if you tried to force the entire nation to do it, yes, there would be an upoar and probably rightly so. But for one small town to do it, to honor a family member, and NFL teams are families, it's no big deal.

I don't know if any of the rest of you have heard more about this yet, but on espn radio today, there were ALOT of vets calling in raising all kinds of hell about how he didn't deserve this and it's not fair to others and all that. Wow !

I knew it would create some controversy, but there are many many people who are genuinely pi$$ed off about this.

I didn't see any flags at half mast when we lost my Dad, a veteran. Who is to say Reggie White is more worthy?

I'm not passionately against this, but I don't think it was appropriate.
Shan I totally agree BUT Lambeau Field did it, not the entire country, and just like you had every right to do it for your Dad who yes deserved it just as much if not more than Reggie White. Get my point?

Hmm...I agree with what everyone has said, and to be quite honest, I'm not sure how I feel about this situation. But there could have been other alternatives to recognize the imapct that Reggie had on the NFL. They could have worn black arm bands or even worn something on their jerseys that had Reggies number on it. I'm just kinda numb on the American Flag being flown at half mast. I don't agree or disagree with it.

But in the same respect I'm also agreeing with Shan. My father served in Vietnam and died a proud Amercian Veteran. But the falg did NOT fly half mast for him or any other member of my family. I had 2 family members who played an important part of Pearl Harbor, flags did not fly half mast for them. So I could see why the vets would be upset about it.

I dunno, like I said, I'm just not sure how I feel about it.

Plus, they did the same thing, brett favre's dad died last year.. american flag at half staff, and nobody said a word about it! now all of the sudden its an issue. 1 person I read about, who lives in green bay, was questioned as to why he didnt raise a stink when they did for brett's dad... he said he didnt know about the flag at half staff then....thats a total crock..green bay is a small town where everybody knows everybody and everybody is a diehard packer fan. If somebody litters on lambeau field or gets a parking ticket..it makes the 6 oclock news!!! The city leaves eats and breathes packer football.

Since when was it nessicary to wait for a national say-so to fly a flag in mourning? There is a funeral home here that flys flags at half mast regularly. Do they require the approval of congress to do so?! NO! Its an honor extended from one American to another. The discression of which belongs to the flag owner.

If people are upset that the Packer orginization doesnt fly a flag for troops, then fly one yourselves! (yes its ok) Its an appropriate honor for the Packers to extend to someone that meant a great deal to tier community. To skew this as a social ill is misplaced. The ill is other peoples reluctance to utilize independantly thier priviliges as a citizen. The criticism comes from thier in ability to do such.

Who is Reggie White? Did he die?

Should I fly my flag at half-mast today?
Your flag should be flown at half-mast upon reliable information that a past or present President or Vice-President has died. It should also be flown at half-staff upon Presidential proclamation. See Section 7-M below for more information.

Can my company decide to fly our flag at half-mast for a former employee?
No. Only the president of the US or your state governor can order the flag lowered to half-staff.

Upon the death of a sitting or former President how long does the flag fly at half-mast? For a Vice-President?
30 days for the death of a sitting or former President. 10 days for the death of a Vice President. See section 7-m below for more information.

How can I show mourning if my flag is on a fixed pole or staff and can't be half-masted?
The flag rules make no provisions for this. However, army regulations state, "A streamer of black crepe 7 feet long and 1 foot wide will be attached to the staff immediately below the spearhead of the U.S. flag."

To answer the poll: "NO" I doubt very much that Reggie qualified.
