Do slip on exhausts restrict the air flow from the exhaust ? and how much so ? Reason for asking is, I've got a guy who can hook me up with a full exhaust or slip on..but he was mentioning about how they restrict the air flow from the exhaust?

why is that?

I don't know about the restriction that is caused by the slip on but I do know that the full exhaust is the best way to go. You will add more HP then just a slip on. :dthumb: Do the full slip on. :)

I'd love to have the full exhaust...we'll see how mr checkbook looks :luck: but lookin for a slip on at the very least. just curious as to why that happens

NO NO NO!!!

Man, how do you guys get this so jack arse backwards!!!

First off, nothing is more restrictive than a stock exhaust, more so the can.

Unless you want to re-jet your carbs, get a slip on. Even then you may have some leanin out problems. I did!

WAY restrictive=stock muffler
less restrictive but MAY have some lean problems=slip on
Virtually no restriction WILL have to rejet=full aftermarket exhaust

Make sense!!

If you get real board one day, unbolt your stock exhaust and unbolt DJ's Yosh slip-on. Check out the weight difference and the size of the hole thru the muffler! It should explain itself!!!

DAMN DO WE HAVE TO TEACH YOU BOYS EVERYTHING!! :D

yes it does, thank you...the guy who we are considering getting it from mentioned how they "can" restrict the flow of the exhaust, but maybe that was in comparison to a full exhaust.

exhausts? Do we need those?
Actually, this is correct. ANY exhaust system except straight pipes that increase in diameter from head to tip will restrict airflow. Because there are those in society who cannot appreciate a 250 or 600 coming down the street at 12,000 rpms with straights, If you can imagine that, they require us to put on mufflers which quiets the bike and also restricts airflow. The trick is to reach a balance with maximum airflow while being able to leave the garage without everyone in town knowing about it!!

*cough* Actually, aftermarket pipes are not always less restrictive than the stock system (ask me how I know). However, in general, a slip-on will flow better than stock and a full system will flow better than a slip-on. Given the fact than most stock bikes will benefit from a change in jetting, I recommend rejetting any time you make a change to the airflow characteristics of your engine.

i assume its more important to reget though after a full system is installed as opposed to just a slip on. is it really that important to rejet after a slip on is installed..is there a significant benefit to ir? or hinderance if you dont ?

I say rejet after you do the slip on. As Larryg said before...after you do any changes to your airflow characteristics of your engine. Can't go wrong. :dthumb:

Again, my point is that even a bone stock bike will usually benefit from jetting changes (as long as they are designed for a stock bike). Likewise, anytime you change the air flow through the motor (either external or internal modifications), you should adjust the jetting accordingly.

That includes a slip-on that is supposed to be designed for stock jetting. Think about it, each bike is different due to production tolerances and now you are going to bolt on aftermarket parts with even larger production tolerances and not change the jetting, it doesn't make sense to me.

There are huge benifits to re-jetting...you wouldn't regret it 1 bit!! It makes your bike come alive!!!

But as Larry said, even a stock bike would benifit from it. And even a K&N air filter can throw off your gas to air mixture ratio...

What about the drop in mpg you will see. As you even said before you used to get a better gas milage before jetting???

I dont ride enough long distances to worry about gas mileage that much.. i stop enuff for it as it is now...alittle more frequently would be a fine trade off for some more power!
