Just a heads up for those without proper ankle protection and for those who think that a late model sportbike is just fine for a Newbie to start out on. Your in luck. This guy has taken your advise. He bought a new sportbike for $8,000 + And, but he didn't have enough money for motorcycle boots.

OK lets see... None of my family, friends, co-workers wanted me to get a bike. oh your going to kill yourself, your going to crash, typical things people say. But no I had to buy a bike and my first mistake I bought a new 04 636 for my first bike.

I managed to get 1400 miles before I crashed. In those miles I experienced head shake a couple of times. I have hit a bumps in the end of a corner, now that scared the **** out of me. Also accelerating onto a empty freeway shifting into 3rd at about 95mph which is most likely my fault for not being smoother...

now the fun part. I went for a ride Sunday Nov 20th 2004. great day just going to et breakfast at the parents. I was wearing my Helmet, Joe Rocket Jacket (none leather), my well padded Camel pack leather full length gloves, Levis, and my vans.

OK at a stop light in front in the left of the 2 lanes going my direction with a 1/2 mile empty straight. Light turns green. I accelerate at a moderate pace shifting about +/-12k into second, then 3rd was about +/- 10k putting me somewhere in the 90 to 100mph? right? well i shifted into 3rd hard enough to bring the front off the ground a little. Well it was enough to induce massive head shake. I tried to ride it out, but it just got worse. The bike started veering to the right lane and the 4' wide shoulder to a 6" curb to 3' of dirt, then a 6' cyclone fence and big redwoods lined the fence. This is what I'm looking at as I veer into the right lane, So instead of staying on for the ride i jumped off the back. ya I jumped off the back probably at 75mph. I remember tumbling violently then sliding into the curb ankles first, then continue to slide, tried to get up but still sliding and ate it again, then continued to slide on my back and saying to my self.. "Holy **** I'm still sliding don't get up wait till you stop" I slide for about 50' waiting to stop. I finally stopped 250' from when i first started to slide, skip, tumble according to police.

When I first stopped I was still in the right lane I looked down to see my right ankle hanging what seem to look like flesh and muscle. I still was able to pick myself up on my left leg and get over to the shoulder on some grass. I looked down and just saw blood spurting out of my right fibula and could see everything inside my ankle. My left ankle at this point was hurting worse which was funny since it was all together compared to the other. I was conscious during the whole thing.. from start till surgery. Had to sit in pain for 10min for ambulance, 15min for them to get me into the ambulance and 20min for the hospital ride in a bumpy ass ambulance. I told the EMT that Cadillac should make ambulances. I mean really the ride sucked. Then goes to say I have a piece of you bone in a paper towel that a bystander found on the side of the rode. lol I was like really... **** thats not good.. the police also said there was a fleshy trail of where i slide from my right leg dragging on the asphalt.

My helmet never hit the ground, my Jacket was slightly damaged, pads saved my shoulder, pack back took allot of abuse saved my back, Levis have holes all over, Gloves took abuse right in the wrist area on both gloves, Shoes might be bloody.

OK, so the final tally was 13 days in trauma, 12 days normal hospital room. Shattered right lowered Fibula (4 pieces), Fractured a lower Tabula in half, also missing 6 inches of nerve, 3 surgery's total for right leg. Left leg shattered fibula in pieces where it connects to ankle. Just one surgery for left leg. Its almost been 4 months since i have walked.... ****

The right lower leg will be amputated in march..... oh ya I'm gonna be Bionic bitch's

The left leg I should be able to weight bear in a week or so...

Kaiser insurance payed so far with out amputation $175,000....

Was getting a bike worth it? no, but **** it was fun

Will ride again? hell ya, but not for a while

Do your ankles hurt from reading this?

Do you still think that a late model sportbike is like "totally okay" for a newbie?

Are you still confident that your Nike crosstrainers are "just fine" for the type of riding that you do?

This was a total accident from a local SF area boy. He just finished breakfast with his mommy and daddy and in the blink of an eye he faces amputation. Everything happens so quickly. Experience and precaution are key factors when riding these machines. Acquired skills to pay the bills and dressing for the crash is not for pu*sies.

You don't just throw a kid into a F-16 Fighter Jet and say go... ;-)

I doubt boots would have helped much. Its pretty hard to break a fibula... Trust me I know... Even if he had ski boots on he may have saved his skin, but if its gonna break its gonna break:yikes:

Maybe being up on one wheel at nearly 100mph hour coming off a red light in what sounds like a residential area had some:bash: thing to do with it.

i bet them $500 booties would of saved his lower leg from the butcher's knife.
ya shouldn't let newbies jump of bikes at high speeds... it's just unnatural.

but i like the dude's attitude. crashing is half the fun (as long as you survive).

If you can afford a new bike, then you can afford the proper gear to ride. And if you cant, then you either look for a dealer that will throw in some incentives with your purchase for gear, or buy a less expensive bike and spend the rest on quality protection. :bonk:

EXACTLY.... basicly I could have bought my bike several times over the last couple years... but at the time... I couldn't afford to buy the gear also... so I didn't... to me... it's ONE PRICE... full gear+Bike= Purchase Price

:withstupi That has always been my standpoint.

That sucks bad for that guy. I hope he bears it all well. We all have been guilty of wearing something that we shouldn't have when riding. And things like this and crash videos remind or teach us that we shouldn't take even a normal ride to the store for granted!

WEAR YOUR GEAR!!!

I don't have proper protection...
the question is, what is your definition of proper protection?
to me, it's helmet and gloves. Would I wear my race gear on the streets? only if i wanna look kewl and do stunts.

You won't see me wearig a firesuit and helmet when driving my car...

If you can't afford full gear and can only get financing on the bike you want, then get the bike you want and get the gear later...
I have friends that buy their dreambikes and not even ride it.

I dont wear boots everytime on my bike, but I think we should have to. If this was wearing boots he would still have whole leg.

I im for the insurance bill that Progressive Insurance is trying to get passed. The law if passed will state, A person not wearing listed safety gear will void his or her coverage. The list included bright color safety vest which I think is a bit much but the other stuff I do agree too, like helmet, eyewear, boots that cover the ankle, jacket and few other things. Companyies are paying way to much to these newbs that go out and try to kill themselves.

No gear....No Insurance coverage is how it should be.:sorry:

Too bad he lost his leg. But what did he expect jumping off a vehicle at 75mph. Am I the only one who thinks that's dumb?
I guess most of us knew how stupid that was with out saying:crazy:

dude, progressive doesn't care much about heath care, only cost to repair/replace damaged vehicles. Health coverage is separate from auto/motorcycle insurance.

so if someone doesn't have gear, his comprehensive policy will not be valid?

my medical is through work...

okay, me bad. Progressive is just trying to find ways not to pay claims...

Progressive has policy that will cover health costs for there customers if they are in a wreck. I had no health coverage when I broke my shoulder 3 years ago so had this added to my poilicy. Progressive covered 100% of my bills...
oh, didn't know progressive is doing health coverage now...
Guess i was wrong. But i still believe insurance companies are evil...
It would suck if they deny claims if seatbelts were not worn, cell phones where being used, or the black box indicates speed above the legal limit.
I have progressive for over 20 years.
