So the inner cable core broke, on my 03 7R, causing my speedometer/odometer to go inop. I need to know if I can only replace the inner core since the cable (outer) isn't damaged? Also, will the local auto parts store have the inner? I also thought about trying a bicycle shop. I have called four dealerships (Monroe Powersports, Rosenau, Bright, and Rec Les) in close proximity and ofcourse, they have none is stock. I could order an entire new cable through them or online for that matter but I really want to fix this by Friday. Any suggestions or am I going to have order a new one and miss all of this great riding weather we're having :sob: ?

When the speedo cable was driven off the front wheel, it could be lubed and would last for 10 years. With new bikes having the speedo cable driven off the front sprocket it is out of sight and not lubed.

First you have to determine if the cable is broken or if the little gear box is broken. Assuming the speedometer is fine, unscrew the speedo cable-housing from the rear of the speedometer. If the cable is already unscrewed, you've found the problem, but that never happens. If you can pull the cable out of the housing, the cable is broken. If you can't pull it out, you have to assume it is not broken, and you will have to take the sprocket cover off and check out the gearbox. If the cable is broken, you have to pull this off anyway, because most cables have to come up from the gearbox.

It helps if you have a manual to work from. Although my Honda manual didn't say diddly about how to do this.

I have already established that the cable was indeed broke. I pulled from one end and the other end stayed in place until I pulled that piece out. My question is, "is it possible to only replace the piece that snapped (inner cable core/insert/whatever you want to call it) in two without replacing the cable sheathing (inner core/insert feeds into). Otherwise, I'll just order the entire assembly (inner core cable/sheathing).

As I said on the WOS board... I think you're going to have to bite the bullet and order a new one. Until then just ride your bike w/o a speedo... it's no biggie!! Besides they are so over rated!!

Speedo cables break from lack of lube, kinks in the routing, or burrs in the cable housing. If you can just get the cable, and I don't think the manufacturer would just sell a $peedo cable, the cable might break again if there is a burr in the cable. Bite the bullet and get the cable and housing. I've broken several speedo and tach cables and always bought the cable and housing together because of a swaged end on the cable that connects to the gearing. I've also broke the gear housing on my Honda. Took longer to take off the bodywork than to replace the housing. Your cable and housing should be less than $50.

It was about $70 for the little gearbox for my speedometer cable, but I had to get it. I go thru two school zones to get to my favorite twisty road. 20MPH, the cops give no leeway, and the fines are double. There were two motorcycle cops writing up tickets when I went thru the second one today. One of them heard my bike and looked up. I nodded to him. Except for the red trim on my bike, it looks like a white and blue BMW police bike.

I can gauge my speed so that wasn't the problem. I use my odometer, which does not work w/o the speedo cable, to keep track of fuel fills. The actual cable isn't that much, it was just the wait for shipping. I wasn't going to ride until I got the cable but we've had great weather the entire week and is expected to continue throughout the weekend. It doesn't matter much now. I'll be ordering the cable today and will continue to ride until it comes in.
