In the past I've used AdAware (it's okay) and SpyBot (marginally better). Today I learned about SpySweeper. It's much better and had a resident service that watches for spyware installs and registry changes much like anti-virus software looks for viruses to install and infect files.

What do you use?

I swear by adaware and spybot..recommend them to all my customers on a daily basis. I also use spywareguard and spyware blaster..which helps block spyware from getting installed, and if installed, keeps it from running..respectively. Both are free.

Spyware sucks..all creators of it should be shot..UGH!!!

Ive heard good things about Xoft Spy as well, but havent used it.

Stear clear of spyhunter!! total junk from what I've seen of it.

I scanned with Spybot, then with SpySweeper. I was amazed how many more things it caught. That's what convinced me. Incidentally, you can download it from ZD.

beware of window washer programs...OUCH..can be a royal pain in the ars!!

I've never tried spysweeper..but I'll give it a shot for the free trial period and see how it goes.

Yeah I use the SpyBot and Adaware programs as well for this... Thanks for the recommendation of SpySweeper. I had lots of spyware installed on my computer and I used SpySweeper and it removed what SpyBot and Adaware couldnt. So thanks for that recommendation.

I use all 3 of those and tell all my customers to use them as well. And not just once a moths or so. I use mine a few times a week to be sure it is clean and good to go.

uninstall it. I did and it works fine now for me.

just to a windows xp system restore, back to before you installed sp2..that'll fix your prob..u can also consult www.microsoft.com and look in their newsgroups for answers..they are helpful let us know how u make out

spybot and adaware are free, and work very well....spysweeper is a free trial period then you have to pay like 29.95 per year to use if u want to keep it.

BTW..i downloaded spysweeper, and worked very well, found 18 programs/cookies/files that adaware and spybot missed. ! good stuff!!

so what do you do once it finds something? i have never used one before and just did. now how do i get rid of the stuff. it will do it for me if i pay for it. is it worth it? does it get rid of things that are legitimate? any info is appreciated. thanks

You've got to be a little careful, but most of the time the stuff it finds is okay to delete. The version you downloaded will delete the found items, you don't have to pay for it.

spybot, adaware, and spysweeper are designed to search out only spyware..they normally dont mess with legit programs/files etc. So its usually pretty safe to allow them to delete whatever they find. However, unless your system restore is turned off, xp and or the program ur running will usually set a restore point b/4 it removes any spyware,so if a program u normally use, stops running after using one of these programs, u can just restore xp, or use the restore function built into the removal programs themselves.

I've found that these programs will sometimes find drivers/files left on your computer from games that you play online, so that would be something to look for...but in general, just downloading the basic programs, and letting them run without changing any settings, you'll normally be OK.

I use "hijackthis" which is free and beats the crap outta anything else out there. But it is powerful and can mess up your system if you remove the wrong things. Be sure to run it and post the log on their forums to get feedback on what to delete

I used that as well..and yeah, unless you really know what your doing, its better to post the log there, and let them tell you what to remove.

cwshredder works well too..cool web search is a major pain in the a$$, so this will search out only that particular spyware.

I also use AVG virus software from grisoft and it has saved my butt more than once. It will check your computer and also will check any disks or CDs or others too. It also has a free download version.

AVG Free edition rocks..catches those damn things that norton & mcafee overlook. Always recommend that to our customers.

www.antivirus.com is a good online scan too! :thumbs:

I've always used adaware. I tried spybot once but didn't like it and won't install it again. If it's too bad then a good clean format is what I prefer.
