Hi,

This is kinda weird, but I was surfing this site yesterday and read the post about the girl laying down her SV. Well today, I was out riding and lost it going over a stick getting a big front wheel wobble and running off the road hitting a big patch of grass and laid it down at about 10-15 mph. I am fine thank god, wearing full gear is a good thing. It is a SV650S, that is the weird part, 2004 though. I totally cracked the front cowling and broke off the shift peg and had to ride back in first. There are no scratches on the engine or rearend. The wheel is also not lined up with the handle bars. I don't see anything really bent on the forks, but don't really understand the mechanics of motorcycle tire alignment being a noobie. Besides some other minor scratches that aren't really necessary to replace. I have full coverage on the bike with a $150 deductible. Should I involve the insurance and have my rates go up or see what the estimate is and go straight pay route. I also have coverage on my accessories seeing as my helmet is no good since i took a nasty blow landing on the pavement. I just thank god I am not a showboat and was just cruising, so wasn't hurt at all.

That sux you went down like that...most people do at some point in time...it's just all about the experience.

I would say if the bike isn't totally messed up and it sounds like its not. Don't report it to the insurance. Your rates will go way up, and so does everyone elses when people make a claim.
I would say find the parts you need on ebay or something first. Use the dealer as a last result. The slightest thing can total a bike out. I have seen brand new bikes get laid down and all that happend was a cracked fairing and a dent in the tank...the insurance adjusters actually total a bike out over this...then you have a salvage titled bike.
Just fix it on your own... :2cents:

no they won't....just find a real cool mechanic at the dealer...I always just go right back to the bay doors and BS with them for a while...get in with them then have them look at it. They usually don't mind checking it out for ya.
post up some pics of it...maybe one of us can see it and let ya know what it is.

Sorry to hear about your fall. It does sound a little worse than mine. I think I made it to 7 (?).

I'm replacing the upper cowl, the lower fairings, the left mirror and the shifter (all for a small sum of $800+). I found the lower fairings on ebay by chance... there were alot of items for the curvey models and some of the older pointy ones. It's hit or miss, and if you hit it, between the price you might get it for and the shipping costs... who knows. You might want to try www.ronayer.com. That is where I'm getting most of my peices/parts from. It might be more expensive than ebay, but at least you know you're getting what you need and it's right.

About the wheel and handlebar alignment.
The S model has clip on handle bars. You probably bent one in the fall. No biggie. It happens all the time.

eBay is a great place for parts. You need to know what the price for the same parts new is. That way you don't rip your self off by bidding to much. Don't forget to include shipping in the total price when bidding. :luck:

I am hoping it is just bent handlebars. I don't think it is though. Because they look perfect when held straight with the bike but the wheel is pointing to the right. It looks like all the force of the fall was taken by the front fairing, it is shifted and cracked pretty good. Haven't checked inside much beside looking for bent forks, which I don't see, but hoping it isn't too bad. I think I will get it looked over today by a dealership. I will probably have them repair the wheel alignment and do everything else myself.

Best case scenario, handle bars are just bent and can be realigned without parts. So I only need to purchase the front fairing, shift lever, and left handlebar endcap.

Worst case, bent forks, massive damage inside the front fairing, and engine damage plus parts mentioned above.

It may be the fairing stay (metal frame that holds the body and gauges) that is bent. Sometimes you can straighten them or you may need a new one.
Look closely at the bars aligned to the frame and wheel. If that appears to be straight. Its most likely the stay. :2cents:

The bars definitely looked straight. I couldn't see anything bent. Even the handle bars looked fine except for a scratched end cap. I dont really understand what knocked off the alignment. The only thing I can think of is when I hit the grass it bent something because it came to a deadstop and threw me off.

You did say the upper was cracked. I'm still betting on a bent Stay. They are very weak and get bent from falling while setting still.

Yeah the upper fairing took a bad shot and is cracked pretty bad on the left side, looks to be pushed in too. It looks like it took all of the fall. Just on the left side though. It seems fine oin the middel where the gauges are.

The best bet is to find the part numbers for all the parts you need. (For my bike, I just went to www.buykawasaki.com. Hopefully, the manufacturer of your bike has a online listing as well.) Then shop around on eBay or the various sites listed in this thread.

It would depend on how old you are. I claimed a 3K job on isurance just before I turned 25 and when I did my insurance renewed a month later and it went down 50 bucks a month.

Most shops will charge you for an estimate and if you get the repairs done there then the estimate money will go towards your deductible.

Ya but if you were doing a claim...most shops can soak up your deductable up to $500.

I am 26 and my deductible for collision and comprehensive are both $150. I brought the bike into the shop and we found several other things that need to be checked out. It is looking more and more like I am going to go the insurance route, the job is probably going to be pretty high.
