Indianapolis, Aug. 17 - As Rosalio Pedraza headed to court a second time to hear the charges against him he used crutches due to injuries sustained in his fatal drunk driving case.

The crashed happened early Sunday at the Indianapolis Zoo entrance stop light on West Washington Street. Prosecutors say Pedraza ran the light and crashed into an SUV carrying five people from a wedding reception.

The impact killed the groom's father, Thomas Youngstafel, and another relative, Joseph Gehler.

The victim's families attended Pedraza's second hearing.

In court, Judge Tonya Pratt learned the 31-year-old accused drunk driver is an illegal immigrant. He admitted he doesn't hold a green card.
Pedraza's brother also took the witness stand. The court learned that he too is an illegal immigrant, he should never have had a valid driver's license.

The brother left the City-County Building immediately after leaving the witness stand.

While prosecutors figure out their next move, outside the courtroom Youngstafel's brother Carl read a family statement about the case. "We would like to ask the public to support such organizations such as Mothers Against Drunk Driving to help strengthen the penalties for first and second convictions of DUI. We need to place this in the hands of the Marion County judicial system as this case progresses."

Deputy Prosecutor David Wyser added, "Hopefully immigration will take charge on this. Then he would be held without a bond. If they are going to hold him on immigration status then he can't make bond."

This isn't an isolated incident. I can say that there are many illegal immigrants who drive up I-45 in Texas from Mexico,with valid Indiana DL's and aren't even legal residents.

In AZ, we see a lot of Mexicans with Oregon DL's. I heard it has something to do with not needing certian documentation that makes it really easy to get a DL there. Dont quote me on that though...

That sounds all fine and dandy, but if you don't make the illegals serve their time, there is no deterrent to keep them from repeating the same crime.


Trust me, we, as taxpayers spend a fortune housing illegals already, we need to get better control of our borders and stop them before they commit crimes.

Money is better spent shipping them back, sure some may illegally gain entry into the country again, but thats their risk. They should not be in this country, so why fill up our jails and spend tax money on them? Thats just stupid, for many of these aliens life in jail is 10X better than what they have or had in Mexi-hole!

I hear ya.... but they just continue to come back faster than we can remove them. And a fortune is spent on that.

They need to have some form of punishment to deter them from returning. And it's not just Mexi-hole... they come from all over the world, then they have to be housed pending travel documents and consulate interviews.
