How cool is leather in the summer? I don't think a well made textile will completely be worthless after a slide at normal speed, I have seen a crashed one in the MSF course I took and it looked wearable besides grey asphalt stains. Don't know about race speeds though.

Leather is the best for all around and the money. It will hold up far better then textile. However, if you can only afford textile for now, get it. Its better then riding in a t-shirt or plain jacket. At least the textile come with some type of body armor in them.

Leather is ultimatly the best, textile is good enough for street.

I have a light leather riding jacket for some light duty play and evening rides, I use my mesh jacket for hot summer days, and I had a textile jacket that I wore all the time before it got ripped.

My next jacket will be a heavy duty leather jacket for sure.

In cold weather, I like leather cause it stops the wind from penetrating through. But in the summer I wear textile. According to the June, 2000 issue of Motorcycle Consumer News, leather is very resistant to abrasion, but only average in resistance to tearing. Coated Cordura and Kevlar stretch are good against both abrasion and tearing, and good against rain.

I would get a textile if it's mainly for commuting purposes since it's usually waterproof and a bit lose fit allowing you to put on more/less clothes depending on the weather. If you're intending to do a lot of hobby riding, a leather jacket would be a much better choice with better protection and fit.

Like they have all said.... either is good for the street. Just understand that you only get one down on a text. where with a leather you can get 2-9 downs.... just ask Twisty to post up pics of his old JR leather jacket!

Depends on what you hit when you land, also. In my getoff last summer I came down in the gravel and slid out into the sticks/grass and my textile (JR Alter Ego) is just fine except for the grass stains. It took a little work to reseat the zipper so I could get it off since I landed on my stomach...

There are textiles and then there are textiles. The polyester nylons that are on the more generic jackets are nowhere as good as the heavy cordura used in Aerostitch, BMW brand, Rukka gears. Naturally they only cost about 1/3 as much too.

Nonetheless, even a cheap textile beats the hell out of T-shirt or denim jacket. Or ill-fitted dress leather jackets.

If you can't afford riding pants then at least go get some shin & knee protectors and wear them under your jean.

:iagree: and thanks for pointing that out. It all boils down to getting what you pay for yet again.

fnf... you're right... there is good gear and there is GREAT gear! But any gear according to the rider's budget is better than nothing!!
