The polyester nylons that are on the more generic jackets are nowhere as good as the heavy cordura used in Aerostitch, BMW brand, Rukka gears. Naturally they only cost about 1/3 as much too.
Nonetheless, even a cheap textile beats the hell out of T-shirt or denim jacket. Or ill-fitted dress leather jackets.
If you can't afford riding pants then at least go get some shin & knee protectors and wear them under your jean.
