That horrifying "clicking" noise

12186 Views 73 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  Craig4722
I have just noticed that when my bike has a cold start (either when it sits for a day or two, or when I start her at night), that if I give it a few revs, I hear a very faint cicking that is syncronized with the engine RPM (hope that makes sense). This occurs in the 3,000-6,000 RPM range (thats at least when I hear it). After the bike is all warmed up to about 150+ degrees, I rev it up and the clicking noise seems to go away. I rode it a few days ago with a 48 hour "rest" in between rides, and noticed it then. Also noticed it tonight when it was sitting at the little ladies house all night after I rode it today. I had to actually use the choke for the first time, or the bike would crap out. Every stop sign on the way home I gave it a rev or two to see if it made the noise. Realisticly, I dont think it was. But by then my mind started playing tricks on me. When I got home and rode in the complex parking lot, I cruised in at 3-6k RPM range and heard nothing. I have never before heard this noise, until I have had a few true cold starts. Is this something I should be worried about? :help:

Toit like a toiger

I hope it cures your problem.

Well afer a few hours of adjusting, I believe the CCT is set perfect, as it makes no clicks and no whizzing sound. The first rev's it was clicking (meaning the chain had too much slack), so I kept tightening it. Then clicking went away, but a whizzing sound (kind of like a big turbo winding up and then down) started. This I figured was the noise meaning it was too tight. After loosening up the bolt again, the whizzing stopped and the clicking started again. 20 frustrating minutes later, Both noises stopped and all I could hear was engine noise. I literally put my ear to the cams to hear for any noises. All I heard was the cylinders pumping. So I dabbed some thread lock on the bolt and tightened the 2nd bold down on the CCT and took her for a test spin. At all the stops I made i just keps revving and holdint it around 3k rpm to hear any clicking, and heard nothing out of the ordinary. I then continued to ride for 30 minutes or so with my new micron bolt on just to hear how it sounds when you twist your wrist. Needless to say I was not dissapointed. The engine seems toit like a toiger now!

Thank you all for your help and suggestions!!!

So you got the manual CCT to work for ya? How did you get by the clearance problem?

Much easier to explain in person, but here goes nothing:

I adjusted the big bolt so that it was right above the weld obstrutcion, but still able enough to manuver inside the CCT fitting (the hole you put the CCT in). Once that is in, I looseley fastened the top bolt so that it stays in place, but you could move the CCT side to side, allowing enough room to fit a socket or closed wrench around the big bolt. I used a closed end socket or wrench so all I would do is scratch the frame/wrench and protect the bolt from any stripping from rubbing on the frame. I tightened it up so it past the weld. Once thats done I put the bottom bolt on (with my swivel sockets, conventional sockets/wrenches wont allow you to get a good surface contact and started to strip the bolts) and tightenend them both up, leaving the big bolt free and clear of any obstructions. I thought to myself, there is only 1 way to get this thing in, and I just figured it out. Once it passed that certain point, I was good to go. Major PITA, but I got it to work. :D

Ya that doesn't make much sense...but ok... glad you got it to work!

 its one of those "you had to be there things" to get it. I dont even think pictures would do the justice either.
Ya no biggie!
do you still experience the vibration at 9-9.5k rpm? i'm wondering if it has something to do with harmonics...all objects have a "natural harmonic resonance", a frequency at which the actual structure vibrates sympathetically, amplifying the sound (vibration) greatly. (as an example, your ear drum registers vibrations, but there is a frequency [around 3000 Hz] where the whole ear canal actually vibrates, boosting the "volume" in that range.) so it could be that your bike has a natural resonance of 150-200 Hz (9000 RPM = 150 cycles per second), where the frame will vibrate more.

i only think this because my bike does it around 7K and i've heard of other's doing it too at different RPMs. could be something wrong, but maybe not. p.s. - i'm majoring in music, thus the knowledge of harmonics. cheers!
CM... I think you may be onto something... I have always heard that resonance when riding with larger groups. You don't hear it all the time but sometimes it will sound like 2 bikes are "humming" together...

:iagree:

I still noticed it, but not as much. Its definitely still there. Like I said Ive talked to 3 experienced riders who have had their bikes for a while and say each one of thier bikes has that certian little range where the bike just vibrates like that. I think youre right when you say its harmonic vibration. Cheers and happy holidays!
:readng: Glad you got it fixed. No back to enjoying it. :dthumb:
