One of my close friends just got rid of his 02 R6 in exchange for an 05 R1. It was beautiful this weekend, so we rode Friday and Saturday. Friday, I took it out the road about a mile, but not a ride of any value. Then Saturday came.
We went to go ride and I told him I was going to take the 1 and he could have the 9. We decided to make a pass out a long-cornered road and then hit the mountain passes which is 2 different mountains with all different turns.
I have two views on it.
The Turns-All I can say is, Damn. I expected the 05 to ride a little nicer than my 03 but this thing is a monster. I've never taken the corners we were taking quite like this before. It does come with a dampner from the factory, which helps out. It wasnt even that it was faster than my 954, but it was smoother and felt better. Given enough time, I could have inched away on the R1. Very smooth, and very smooth power. Which leads me to my next point.
The Power-Taking for granted that I put around 100 miles on his bike that day and it still only had about 450, the power of the R1 is totally different than I expected. At 300 miles, he was told he could take it up to 9k. Nobody had ridden on 1 wheel on it yet, and since he took the liberty of 1-wheelin the 954, I took my turn. 1st gear, turned on the power. Nothing. After feeling the way the bike acted, my first thought was the gearing in the R1 was completely different. The gears are a lot longer than the 9. To bring the front up, you have to give it everything, and just wait. It will bring the front up in the high Rpm's by itself if you just crank on it and ride it out. Just different than what I thought it was going to be as far as power on tap. It does need a pipe, and still has some more break in miles. That will make some difference, but it just doesnt have the down low grunt that I expect from a 1000. Still tho, it is the limited edition R1 in all black and kind of makes you  a little.
