It seems like this project has taken forever to get completed. And fortunately, its about to do so. Certian drawbacks popped up this weekend. There are a few things that need to be done and then its inspection time!

1. Headlamp replacement. Purchased and waiting for delivery and install
2. Rotor replacement. Purchased and waiting for delivery and install
3. Front turn signals Plan to purchase soon
4. Fork seal replacement. Fork started leaking on saturday. going to dealer
5. Exhaust/passanger bracket replacement. Probably going to dealer, depends

After that it should be good for an inspection and I will be able to leagally ride it on the roads!

BTW where is the engine VIN usually located? Im sure it depends on what make and model of bike, but its an 01 zx6r. I think Gas Man has the closest thing to my bike. Yo Gas, any idea?

The vin should be on the top of the trans behind the head.
Would that be it above the clutch cover? I saw that number on my engine, but I think its a smaller number than the VIN...not sure though I guess I have to go home and check tonight...

cool, thanks Jeeps! It looks like that number on the block is the middle portion of the VIN, at least from the looks of it. Then VIN on the title and frame is like a 16-18 or so numbered VIN. The one on the block is 10 or so. I am assuming the the middle portion of the VIN is what counts? Does that sound right? Im gonna check it out when I get home.

Thanks again for the info!

I'm not sure what all the numbers mean or account for. I do know that the bikes I have built, needed frame vin # motor vin # and bill of sale to account for how I got the parts for the two. The rest just needed to pass DOT inspection and go apply for a reconstructed title.

Well the VIN #'s for frame and engine SHOULD match. But, with my luck with this bike, I just wanted to make sure before I go in to DMV looking like a fool. I have everything in order, except for that VIN, but I think I am all settled with that info.

Thanks Jeeps!

Okay so I got home and checked out the VIN on the FRAME and the ENGINE. The frame has a 17 digit number. The engine has a 9 digit number starting with the model number ZX600--followed by a few more letters and numbers and a funny looking 9. None of these numbers really match up even pattern-wise. IS there another VIN on the engine somewhere? Do they take these 2 (frame and engine) VIN's and check that way? I ahve the bike Titled in my name, so obvoiusly the VIN's cleared something through the DMV. :help: an idiot out here!!!

I don't know of any other numbers on the block, except for the amount of oil the case holds. If the bike is already titled in your name. You shouldn't have anything to worry about. If you didn't let your tag laps, you shouldn't have to get a new DOT inspection.

Its a Salvage bike, and I am preparing it for the Level 3 inspection. But I did more research and noticed that most if not all bikes have a seperate VIN for engine and frame. It should be all good though. Like you said I already have it Titled in my name so they must have ran the VIN to check if it was parted out or not, and no red flags came up. I am just getting really nervous as it is closing in on my inspection appointment and I have a few more things to do. But thank you Jeeps, this VIN thing should be resolved now. :D T

Alright, 1 less thing to worry about...

Ya don't sweat it... it will be fine...they have no reason to doubt that! Besides, it is probably more like a serial number on the engine and a VIN on the frame!

Thanks all!

Yea I was just getting nervous. I spent my entire summer working on the damn thing, and it would really irk me if I failed to get it registered because of something stupid like a VIN or a missing piece. Luckily, I just purchased my final part I need for the bike to be "complete" yesterday! Half of it is delivered today, the rest probably sometime next week. I am getting really close :D

Moral of the story: TO AVOID HASSLE, DONT BUY SALVAGE BIKE!!!
