I've been wanting to buy a sport bike for a while but just never made the final push. Finnally I have convinced myself to buy a bike, the last question is what kind of bike to buy. Im looking for some advice of some veteren riders. Who know the scoop and have a pretty good idea on what bike a begginer should be riding. Im a begginer to the sport bike thing aloughth I rode dirt bike for a couple of years when I was in high school. Your response is greatly appreciated. Sincerly Straydog16

I just went through this process. You may want to do a search and read the lashing other recieved. Most everyone will tell you not to but an R bike as your first bike. I was told katana, Sv's, and other similar biek are much more forgiving than R bikes.

Almost every bike out there that has an R in its name is a race spec bike and no where near as forgiving.

I had a good amount of experience but never owned one. I went with an 00 GSX-R 750, because i got an unbelievable deal on it. But I have yet to unleash even 10% of its capabilties.

:welcome: :twfrox: ...Take the MSF course before you buy anything...They provide bikes for you to ride...after the Course, you may decide you don't want a sportbike. I don't know your age, but do some research on the insurance premiums you will be paying for different bikes housed in different areas...this could be a big factor in your decision...Finally, look around and see what's out there...

Here is what I said yesterday.

Are you wanting new or used? Did you take the MSF course already?

SV650S' are good for squids like us, I love mine. The new ninja 650r is probably going to be pretty sweet and comparable to the sv, plus it's full fairing unlike stock SVs, but you probably will only be able to find it new. They always say to buy what you feel comfortable laying down because it will happen.

No one I know recommends the top tier 600s for a newb, but it's your money and life, so you are free to buy what you want, just be prepared to accept the consequences.

This is the SV with lower fairing, I have some other mods done to it now like the rear seat cowl and fender eliminator dont have pics of that yet. Still waiting on my flush mount side markers.

this is the ninja

Don't listen to what any of these people say - go out and get a Busa or a liter bike - they are easy to learn on.

Just kidding  - I would do a search and read some other New Rider threads there's lots of good advice there. :luck:

Look at Sv650's and older 600 supersports. Their power is sub 100hp and (i know we all care about this) are respectable on the street. The MSF will put you on 500cc (or less) bikes so if it feels like alot, then there are alot of inexpensive GS 500's and Ninja 500's to learn on too.

My opinion: i think the SV is an excellent bike for beginners and vets alike. The motor is more flexable than an SS 600. and with some tweaks (tires first), the bike can do more than you think it can. :luck:

What tires do you recommend?

Pirelli Diablos transformed my bike. SVupON1 will agree with me that they work great on the SV. I'd imagine some Pilot Powers or Diablo Corsas would be wonderful too. (powers are my next tire to try) What do you currently have Vol?

I thought it was silly when I saw a tire test in a magazine recently, I forget which one, had the new Dunlop Qualifier's beating everyone else... Definitely skeptical about that. I know I'm stickin with my Michelin Pilot Power's :dthumb:

Do a search in the Beginner's Corner... there are TONS of threads on this very subject. And I mean TONS!

We must get the same question at least 3 times a week!!

We should write a standard newb bike guide that you can just copy paste to every new rider that shows up. Get pictures of all the good bikes to consider.

I think my first post was asking the difference between a Kat 600, my SV, and the new ninja. Wasn't that long ago, but seems like forever now. Maybe because it is freakin cold and I can't ride that often. We need :h20:
