Some of you may know that I joined this forum to bitch about some issues with my new but left over 04 R6. I complained about the tranny being clunky and a lack of throttle response that appeared to be a computer problem rather than an engine charactoristic and several other complaints. I was hoping that some of these problems would be resolved when the engine broke in more. THat does not seem to be the case.

I think that it is an absolutely gorgeous bike, but I'm frustrated with it.

I want to sell it, cut my losses and get something else. I am not too owrried about losing much money as I got an amazing deal on it, so i figure I should be able to get rid of it at a lose of only about $1000 or so.

I have also decided that my next bike will be something that someone else has already taken the biggest loss on- IE used. I found a beautiful 2001 RC51 in the auto trader for $8200 (Canadian) it is a private sale, so there is no tax, and I suspect I can probably knock him down to $7500 or so if I walk in with cash.

So basicly, I would like to learn as much as I possably can about these bikes. 01 model year specificly. I am coming off a problematic R6, that I never got pulled over on and never layed down. Am I going to likely kill myslef on this bike? (Never ridden a litre bike) and what can I expect for problems or whatever.

No matter what the case, I am atleast a month form the purchase as I need to sell my bike first, so there is of course the chance of it being sold before I can get it.

Anyone who can give any impressions of the bike at all, it's greatly appreciated. :cheers:

The problems are recognized by the dealer, but he says there is nothing they can do. I love the bike, but it's been a PITA since i bought it. It really sounds like it is grinding itself to pieces. I change the oil every couple rides, it has never even started to chance color, I treat it liek a baby, and I get rewarded with grinding and no throttle response and a tranny that never seems to be happy in any gear. It's jsut time to call myself an idiot and get something different.

And no, I am definatly not selling it for $1000, I said that because I got such a great deal on it when I bought it, that I can probably sell it for only $1000 less than I paid. :cheers: I will likely end up losing a bit more than that, but by getting a great deal when I bought it, that really helps cut down what you lose at resale. :twfrox:

iv heard a lot of peple complain about aftermarket stuff causing those sort of problems.

She's absolutely 100% stock. It acted like this from the time I left the showroom and I just took it out for a quick ride a few minutes ago and it still does it. I'm just not very impressed.

Besides, if I end up getting the RC51, I will likely be the only one in the area with one, not to mention the fact that a V2 is pretty cool anyway. Right now the R6's are a dime a dozen (Ok, about $108,000 a dozen, but I digress :lol so that is also kind of nice, not to have what everyone else has.

After a little more reading it seems that it's a horrible around town cruiser, but it loves twisties and fast speeds. That is excellent as I am on the highway a lot and am just a few miles away from the most amazing set of twisties you've ever seen. They are going up a mountian into hillbilly country, so there are practicly no vehicles and no police.

Anyway, back on topic, the bike is stock, it runs great, but it is annoying me with the sounds it makes, or not so much annoying, but worrying. It constantly sounds like it's going to granade itself. It's had the valves checked, never ajusted as they have never moved, but checked twice, and there seems to be nothing wrong, but the dealership owner rode it and said that I was right about it not sounded good. We jsut have no idea what the problem is. And quite frankly, I've always had Honda's and really wouldn't mind getting back to the red side.


My concensus on the thing is that even though I got a good deal on it (being left over from the 04 MY) I still paid a lot of money to have a bike that not only annoys me but worries me. It may be running fine mechanicly, but it doesn't sound good. IF I'm going to spend 7-8-9 grand on a bike, I'd really appreciate it if it was enjoyable to own.

So does anyone actually have any thoughts on the RC51?

the 01 i think is an sp1. there was a lot of inprovements to the sp-2 to include swingarm and a most of the parts came from the race team stuff. also has one less spoke on each wheel to cut down on weight. if its that rc or none then get it and be happy, but if you could get an sp-2 for about the same price then i would get that insted. i had a sp2 and my friend had a sp-1 and we both agreed that the 2 was better. after the first year it went to sp-2 i think it was 02 :here: all models after that have nothing but paint diffrences.

Thanks guys, you are correct, the 02 was the first year of the gen 2, but in the area I live in, there are practicly no bikes other than Harley's and Japanese Harley copies. That of course means a major limit of used sportbikes within a reasonable distance. So the chances of finding another realitivly rare bike are slim.

On a related note, I am not sure if I could even ride it. Firstly, I have never ridden a litre bike, my anemic R6 is the only sportbike I've ridden and it absolutely has more ability than I have balls. I was at the Honda stealership today just kicking tires (not really..) and the salesman tried to tell me the CBR600RR they had in stock (silver :disapp: ) was much different from the R6 which I kind of don't believe. :skep: But he pestered me into sitting on it and I felt like it was actually too big, I could only touch with my toes, which is not comforting on a $12,000 (CDN) machine, if you know what I mean... I thought that was weird as I could touch with a lot more foot on my R6, not flat, but much more than the RR.

Needless to say, I'm concerned, I am not a tall guy (5'8) so now I am worried that I have to even consider ride height in my bike choice.

Oh boy, bikes sure kick ass, but they can be a pain before you even buy them. :lol:

Do you just get noise with your valves or what? My 04 R6 is noisy in the valves and the tranny is a little clunky but i'm use to it now. I have 13K on it and it's still running strong. You're not gonna get a sick amount of throttle response on it as a litre bike. it's a 600. How many miles are on it? If you dealer said it doesn't sound right than they should do something about it. How long have you been riding anyway?

I bought it jsut before summer, I could go out to the garage and check the title, but I'm too lazy. But it was some time in the middle of April. It's got 11,500 and change KM on it now (5500 miles I think). I changed the oil every 1000 km with synthetic, never let it discolor at all. Always had fresh oil. To be honest, this is my first street bike, I have been on dirt since I was 9.

As for the throttle response, I do not think it is because of the smaller engine, it really seems like a FI issue because it just seems like it's not reacting to throttle imputs as fast as it should. The mechanic took it all apart, checked the valves and told me that he couldn't see anything wrong with it at all, but after riding it he told me there was definatly a problem, we just don't know what it is. But it seems to run fine, not damaging itself, it just sounds bad.

Ohwell, I'll let them look at it one more time, if they can't find anything, it's gone. I love the looks, and it's fun, but it's too expensive to be so annoying. Even my CRF450 that constantly needs valve ajustments is less annoying. This R6 just appears to be a lemon. Shame though, it truely is a beautiful bike, and that Yamaha blue is just amazing.

trust me dont buy a sp1 go the sp2 for sure worth the extra dollars the sp1 is a pig.

Sounds like you need to get off that Yam and on back on a Honda but, I wouldn't let any salesman tell me the RR is any better than the R6. They did make some nice improvements with the sp2. I think you would love either.
