Another huge performance from Giorgio Cantalupo teamed up with Aprilia; this time the Tuono 1000 R and the valiant centaur from Piedmont have gone all the way to China to challenge the most sacred of myths. The 38th Macau GP plays host to the world championship Road Races on the citizen's circuit, Guia, known for its snaking along the roads of Macau for 6.2 kilometers.
Every year, all of the discipline's specialists come out on the track, or better, on the road, supported by teams which often volunteer official motorcycles, going to show the enormous interest generated by this type of race.
The undertaking of our team, just like the prize seized a few months back at the Tourist Trophy, proves again to be quite arduous. They had to program for a mixed course which alternates stretches of very ridable roads concealing sudden changes of direction with long straight-aways with speeds exceeding 250 km/h, and fast curves, while the entire route is lined with a double guardrail certain to evoke a fair amount of fear.
Regarding the motorcycle, the faithful and by now, well-known Aprilia Tuono 1000 R was still in the "TT Configuration" including the same suspension settings and the usual, a gracious propeller turned nasty with the pair of major throttle bodies, and a racing exhaust pipe, remaining an essentially standard motorcycle. All of this adds value to such a historical undertaking as the regulations of the Macau GP are quite permissive. They accept Moto GP, four-stroke motorcycles, and prototypes (with a separate category for the last two types).
Regarding the pilot, Giorgio Cantalupo certainly did not need any introductions as he is the Italian multi-champion in both hills and on the track, the 1997 vice European SBK champion who regularly makes himself heard with optimal rankings in all of the world's most famous motorcycle races: the TT at Bol d'Or, Suzuka's 8 Ore and Ulster GP, and finally a huge third place at the Battle of the Twins in Daytona in 1991.
