Hand Signals
START ENGINES AND LETS GO
With your right or left arm extended, move your index finger in a
circular motion. Usually motioned by the Road Captain or ride leader.
STOP
Extend your left arm at a 45-degree angle with the palm of your hand
facing rearward. Can also flash brake lights very rapidly, which is an
indication to watch out or possibly stop quickly.
PASS ME
Extend your arm at a 45-degree angle and with your palm facing
forward wave your hand back to front. Can be used if you are leading
but aren’t sure of where your going, in which case you may also point
forward and shrug your shoulders to convey that message.
COP (OR EMERGENCY VEHICLE) AHEAD
Pat the top of your helmet.
HAZARD LEFT
Extend your left arm at a 45-degree angle and point towards the
hazard. OR Extend your left leg at a 45-degree angle and point
towards the hazard using your foot.
HAZARD RIGHT
Extend your right arm at a 45-degree angle and point towards the
hazard. OR Extend your right leg at a 45-degree angle and point
towards the hazard using your foot.
DON’T PASS ME
Extend your arm at a 45-degree angle and with your palm facing
rearward wave your hand front to back.
PIT STOP OR STOP ENGINE
Bend your elbow and point to your torso repeatedly. A cutthroat
motion can also be used which doubles for cut your engine.
TURN SIGNAL ON
Pinching your index finger and thumb together repeatedly.
SINGLE FILE
Position your left hand over your helmet with your fingers extended
upward. This indicates the leader wants the group in a single file
formation. Usually this is done for safety reasons in tight turns or
curves.
LEFT TURN
Raise your left arm horizontal with your elbow fully extended. AND USE YOUR TURN SIGNAL.
SLOW DOWN
Extend your left arm at a 45-degree angle and move your hand up and
down.
STAGGERED FORMATION
Extend your left arm upward at a 45-degree angle with your index and
pinkie finger extended. This indicates that it is safe to return to
staggered formation.
RIGHT TURN
Raise your left arm horizontal with your elbow bent 90 degrees
vertically. AND USE YOUR TURN SIGNAL.
SPEED UP
Raise your left arm up and down with your index finger extended
upward. Usually indicated by the leader.
READ SIGN (not pictured)
Point at sign. If it's a highway sign with multiple exits listed, hold up
the number of fingers corresponding to which exit you want (e.g. two
fingers for the second exit listed).
NEED FUEL (not pictured)
Point to the top of your gas tank.
NEED FOOD (not pictured)
Pat your stomach.
TIGHTEN UP (not pictured)
Raise your left arm, hand in a fist and repeatedly move up and down
in a pulling motion. This indicates the leader wants the group to close
ranks.
WANT RIDER TO COME ALONG SIDE YOU (not pictured)
Point at the rider you want to talk to, and then pat leg.
