If you are new to the street, a MSF class never hurts. http://www.msf-usa.org/

I would highly recommend it but if you don't want to go through the class, you might at least want to look over their site, they have a lot of good information in their "Library/Safety Tips" section.

Granted the Bandit 1200 would not be most people's pick for a first bike for a new rider. You said you are an experienced rider so it's likely you know the basics to include throttle control. So starting on a 1200 is possible (I don't think I'd recommend it, but it is possible).
Remember riding on the street, is very different that dirt. Find some friends that already ride on the street and gather all the information you can. Wear proper gear. The hardest part will be figuring out which information is useful and which is BS. This site is a good place to start...:twfrox:

well... a bike that big isn't something that's widely recomended to start on... 600cc (650cc Vtwins) are about the biggest I would recomend... but I'm not to familiar with that bike...

Personally I wouldn't want to learn on my dream bike... I'd be to affraid of dropp'n it

anyways... good luck what ever you choose

I had a good amount of dirt experience and failry limited street experience. It really is totoally different on the street. With dirt all I didi was peg the throttle back as far as possible and try to control the mayham, on the street things are different, there are a million more elemnts that you cant control. Your ridign experience will be good, but it wont be enough. I say go with what ever bike you can afford to trash and take it easy and practice, Thats what Im doing now

stay away from closed (fully faired) body for learning on street. you will drop it. big thing to learn on street is the bike is heavier and will be have more momentum than dirtbikes when making sharp turns. i started with dirtbikes also, but did alot of arials before going asphalt. my first street bike was a ninja 900. it was very heavy and took about 3 drops to get used to it and felt comfortable doing wheelies.

avoid wide open throttle as much as possible.

i dont know. this is a tuff subject, i think.

everyone else sees black and white. Your a new rider? geta 600 or a 500ex.
what? you want a 1000+??!!!:yikes:

as someone said you dont want to learn on your dream bike cuz you'll crash it
I learned on my dreambike and didnt drop it (yet! 2 years now). I mean i guess its a hard thing to do, and maybe im a natural :dthumb: lLolL. but i think if you feel confident enough, and are a sensable, level headed individual its okay to get a big bike.

BUT YOU MUST...respect the machine, and value your own life. Im sure this has been discussed a million times. but you really have to be careful out there. lots of danger. road surface. obstacles. neighborhood dogs. distractions , and the biggest THREAT, CARS!! believe me buddy when i say. you really really should always assume that every car does NOT see you! its ridiculous how oblivious people are to bikes. It makes me crazy and want to go postal on all the clueless car drivers. but its something you have to get used to.

so i say get what you want, but be careful and dont ride out of your skill level. also taking a safety course is a good idea.

when i went to get my first bike (929) the guys at the dealership called over the manager after i told em what i wanted, and he started trying to talk me out of it and offering me deals on 600's and giving me this whole load of crap about how he didnt want to be responsible for my death and how much better it is to start on a 600. and literally refused to sell me a 929. two years later, i'm still alive, and now own two 929s and will never ever buy a bike from Motorcycles of Manchester.
I rode dirtbikes since i was about 7 on and off. i felt comfortable enough and realized wut can happen if your not careful. when i was 14 i got a 1991 xr250. so you could say ive been riding bikes too big for me forever. but it taught me to respect the machines and be careful with my damn self.

good luck.

Why do you do you want to start bigger than 600? I'm just wondering... I'm not sure if it was your intention but you basicly blew off the idea of a 600... most 600 actually are too much bike for a new rider (to the street) let alone a 750! :2cents:

At the ripe old age of 18 and many years of dirt riding. My first bike was a VF1100. And in no time I was riding wheelies at 110mph. And never once laid it down. Next bike for thrills was a cbr600f2 also never wrecked. However, I was not to confident to read up on street tecniques(sp) and listen to others advise. You have a one up on most of us and that is the power of the web to seek usefull info. If you have good shifting and throttle controll you will be fine. You have shown some responsibility just by asking first for advice. Now use this info to your advantage. You have been told about the risk of a larger bike but common sence is cheeper. Use your head for more than a place to hold your helmet. As far as The Bandit 12 goes all I can say is AWESOME choise. I almost bought one my self but Instead I whent with the FZ1. I two like th nekked bikes. And the Bandit has so much torque I would bet it is a blast to ride. all day or just short hops. I love my two up riding bike I have lots of room and can enjoy it for hours if I wish. But if I want to lean over and give it a push, I can do that to. Just as you will be able to with a Bandit 12. I like the New FZ1 But in reality it is not for me. I still like the 05 ond down. Good luck with what ever you get and Please ride safe so you can post your stories with us every night.:dthumb:

I understand that, don't want to be upgrading every year, most college students aren't wealthy. Just be carefull even an old 500 can get away from you.

And what some of these guys aren't considering is that the Bandit 1200 doesn't really put down the power of a sportbike 1200 of today's technology.

I don't think it would be a horrible bike to start on as long as you can respect the bike and that you don't have riding expierence to justify a big throttle twist!

it's cool...

though there's a big diffrence in performance between a 500 and a modern 600....

but I know what it's like to be strapped for cash... but try to find a friend that will let you try a newer 600 and you'll see what I mean.

as for the prestige... well... just don't let that be the deciding factor... it really shouldn't be much of a factor at all.. (in my opinion) but it's your bike...

either way... Welcome to the forum... look forward to seeing pictures and stories about what you decide on!:welcome: :twfrox:

prestige looks real cool splattered with blood. Ok that is the end of my rant.

In the end it's your choice and get what you want because you won't be happy with something you didn't really want, just be careful and ride with gear. You can let your ego do the buying, just don't let it do the driving.
