I grew up riding anything I could get my hands on, but was never allowed to have a bike. So, I'd let friends ride my quads and I'd ride their bikes whenever possible. that's been 15 or 16 years ago at least, but I'm itching to get a bike now. CRF250 maybe, that seems about right. I was a huge Ricky Johnson and Johnny O'Meara fan, SuperX kicked ass back then.

My g/f is wanting to learn how to ride, so I'll probably send her to the Basic MSF just to learn a bit there. Then before getting her on the street, let her screw around on an XR80 or something along those lines. Dirt and street are entirely different, but the confidence translates.

Who grew up riding dirt and do you still ride?

Oh yeah....still ride dirt and love it.

Started dirt riding over 35 yrs ago ( Honda mini-trail) and now (riding a '95 RM-250) I'm teaching the wife to ride a quad LT-250 and she's lovin it oo.

She's even talking about wanting to learn how to street ride.

Dirt riding has little to nothing to do with street riding... let her do a basic MSF coarse and go from there... you don't her to get the 2 different sports confused!

True, however just about everyone I know that can truly ride their asses off started on dirt.

That was for sure a newb comment. How long have you been riding? Are you track guy or straight-line type? 80% of today’s road racers come from dirt riding of some sort.

And for a person that has never ridden before the dirt is a great way to start. It helps you learn bike control and what to do when sliding occurs.

Newbie? Are you smoking crack? I have been riding for about 7 years solid and get into a bit of everything....

My problem is with these SQUIDS that go out and get a liter bike as their first street bike ever..."because I rode dirt sense I was a kid".... BLAH BLAH BLAH!!

There are some 2 wheel charateristics that are the same but it's not the same game!

Pig...alot of that is pure endurance...that can be gained by alot of different means...

This debate is one of my squid pet peeves!

I don't think it's squidish and you're in the minority on that arguement, IMO. You talk to anyone that kicks ass on the street and 9/10 times, they've been riding dirt since they were kids. It's just a natural progression. Shyt, look at Nikky Hayden.

Gas Man isn't a squid, and I'm sure he can ride his azz off. He's just a little opinionated at times like most of us. lol Plus he rides a Kawi, what do you expect.
