This was a good writeup posted on another board by a medical pro/rider that did a stint at our local Trauma center here in Seattle. He outlines very well what happened in each case and what gear the rider was/wasn't wearing. It's a good read for anyone, I think. To be clear, there are no photos directly in the post, so the link below is safe for anyone. If you do not have a strong stomach, DO NOT click on the links to the photos. Again, these are some NASTY ones.

I'm not saying you HAVE to wear it, I'm just asking that everyone but especially those new to the sport and looking around here CHOOSE to wear it so we can all have more riding partners for a long time.

Ride safe and rubber side down folks

Being a new rider and having taken the MSF course, I just shake my head when I see people wearing less than minimal gear (Helmet, Gloves, Long sleeve shirt/jacket, long pants and boots). It's funny, you see most riders out there in less minimal gear, it's sad. They need to hang out for a weekend at a Trauma Unit.

i have been down once. ran into the side of a car. he had his blinker to the right so i went to pass him on the left the jerk turned left i was going about 45 at the time before i rolled on the juice to go around him and bam over the car and face planted on the road. had full leathers on. dislocated both my shoulders and messed my helmet up a bit and the leathers. but nothing on my body. just think if i would have had flip flops on and a wifebeater and shorts.

See I KNEW I shouldn't have looked at those pics!!! Because being an extremely new rider it makes me scared to even be on the streets. :puke:

BUT I DO have gear!!! And it will go on everytime I ride.

hmm I seem to remember another post where I was so called stereo-typing people without gear? is this proof enough for you to back up my strong OPINION from the other post? make some of those shots your desktop wallpaper so you remember not to be a squid..

great post.. we need more of this to make people aware of exactly what they are risking when they decide to ride without gear, etc.

:iagree: Ironicaly I thought about reading this post last night...but chose to skip it..was too sleepy..... Im a newbie rider and just recently bought my bike. Took a quick ride this morning, trying to familiairize myself with the bike and went a little bit wide on a turn, clipped the curb and laid the bike down.

Luckily I was wearing helmet, body armor, gloves and boots. Right shoulder, elbow andknee got banged up..but was saved by the armor...except for my right knee ( bit bruised and sore...didnt have leg protection), left hand knuckles got banged up a bit (my gloves were to light on protection: icon pursuit)

After the spill this morning I went to gear shop to exchange my body armor and gloves for something that offered greater protection....LOL.... I bought a better riding jacket, the Icon field armor vest and knee/leg protectors; after I post this reply Im going to order Stunter X Leather Gloves.

Damn, net...sorry to hear that. I AM glad to hear you were at least wearing SOME kind of gear and that it (mostly) did its job for ya. Better luck in the new gear and may you never need it again!

PS. How's the horse?

Hence the reason I just prefer not to! It's hard enough to ride hard in general. I don't need pics to haunt my mind anymore than the safety stuff I get at work does!

Finally had no choice but to look at the pix for my speech. They'll make for some interesting slides. My poor classmates.:sorry: They def. emphasize the imp. of wearing full gear all the time. Like the Doc said, "sweat wipes off, road rash doesn't.":iagree: Most of the pix aren't that bad, unless the smallest drop of blood turns ur stomach. The hand, however, is gruesome, but just reminds u that fingerless gloves & other similar types offer absolutely no protection. Accidents happen. That's why I wear full gear.

Myself and KatanaMan off this forum are trying so hard to convince our good friend not to get a SuperSport bike as his first one, he won't listen, all he wants is a CBR, Gixxer, ZX.. and so forth. I sent him this link..he's so hard headed he probably still won't listen, he's just going to have to learn the hard way.
