if you were riding them on the back of your bike even if you didn't wear gear?

I saw a gentleman today on a cruiser with his little girl on the back. She was in shorts, sandals, a t-shirt and beanie helmet. I guess I never really thought about this until today. She was about 8 years old and it really irritated me to see that because I didn't feel she was old enough to understand the ramifications of not wearing the appropriate gear. I figured even if I chose not to wear gear as an adult, I feel I'd still want to educate my child into the need of wearing it and protecting them. Kind of like my dad grew up without seatbelts...once they came out, he still doesn't wear one, but as soon as I started driving, he made me wear mine. Is this something anyone else has ever thought about or experienced?

That's what I was thinking, but since I'm not a parent, I'm not really sure if my opinion is valid or just some random thought I had while driving. :D

:iagree: I am not a parent either...it's just morally correct.

Most definately a child should wear gear..in fact any passenger needs to be wearing gear regardless of the age or lack of common sense of the person in front of them.

Well, since I always wear gear, I know I would always make my daughter wear gear. Here's the other aspect of it:

If a person has kids, they should also be more apt to wear gear, seatbelts, etc. They need to think about their kids and be safe so the kids won't suffer without a parent.

I always wear my gear and would insist on my kids wearing it.

However, if I didn't have enough gear for my kids to ride on the back with me, I'd give them mine. I already have two jackets and two pairs of gloves so I just gotta get another lid.

But anyways, since I don't have kids, this is just my feelings. I'd make them wear it before I wore mine cause my kids lives are more important than my own.

I don't ride with passengers. I won't ride with my kids on the back.

The choices I make to ride are mine, and I accept the risk that something may happen...

I won't take the same chances with my kids, they're worth too much to me.

Flawed logic? Possibly... but it's my choice.

:iagree: I share scorpions philosophy on this. It really irritates me when people take kids on their bike to begin with :cursin: .I dont care how good or how much riding experience the person has....I view it just as reckless as drinking & driving......

Yes, until they're old enough to decide for themselves.
Shan is onto the right angle...

Kids don't know better it is our duty as adults and parents to educate them on the rights and wrongs. It's just oo bad that there are so many kids these days that were born from ignorant F's for parents.

This is the reason I say that my wife and I need to have kids... to offset the stupidity in the rest of the world...

i definately would make sure my girls are protected when they ride with me. unlike most others here though, i look forward to the day i can share the joy of riding with my kids. i know my oldest daughter is waiting for the day she can ride with me. i think it would be a special bond created between us. i would be sure to take all possible precautions, therefore if anything did happen, it wouldn't be due to negligence on my behalf. i hope this doesn't make me irresponsible as a parent. i just want to experience life, and allow my kids to experience it too. life is so short...

The funny thing is I saw the exact same thing 4 days ago at the grocery store parking lot. He was in shorts and a tank with sandals. The girl in shorts and a tank as well. Except the girl was in a full face helmet. I gave him the puzzled look, but he just kept on riding. Then and there I knew that gear for kids is a good idea to have if you plan on having children ride with you.

I think teaching your kids to wear gear at a young age will help influence them to wear gear when they are older. Like most of you said, If for some reason I decided to take my cousins or any child with me on my bike, I would sacrifice my gear for their safety. I dont think it would ever come to that unless we had an emergency and needed to get somewhere and all I had was my bike.

Its not a funny thing!
I spoke with two riders (on cruisers) today with their daughters (both under 10) on the back. They had nothing on except street clothing and bennies. I asked them why the would take the girls ridding with out any more protection? They replied, Its to hot for the jackets (they had them in saddle bags) and they were being careful. I asked, what if? They had no reply and rode off.

I could see a child abuse or neglect case if the what if happened.

By the way, I voted NO... my reasons are posted above, but simply, I wouldn;t ride with anyone on the back... too much responsibility, and I don't have to and won't accept it for anyone especially someone I love... until it's their INFORMED decision.

I've got no kids of my own, but my sister's got 4 boys, the eldest two are 8 now (twins). They got thier first bike, a Suzuki JR50 two years ago. They always ride with helmets, body armour, gloves and boots, most of which was supplied by their Uncle Chuck! I was stoked when they got it, I only get to see them about once a year, and I love to go out and watch them riding around. :dthumb:

Everyones entitled to their opinions, but I was astonished that some of you won't take your kids on your bikes. I'm not saying you're wrong or anything, I'm just saying it suprised me!

Chuck
